A Mystery Science Theater 3000 birthday party

I LOVE BIRTHDAYS. They make me very excited. Happily, I have a husband who, while less excitable, loves me for my super-planning tendencies. This is the birthday party I threw him this year.

A Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party you can totally pull off

Oooh how I love the birthday party that Elle recently threw for her now one-year-old daughter, Penelope. The decor, food, and attire were inspired by Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and unlike a lot of birthdays you’ll see, this one is TOTALLY pull-offable. You basically need cardboard, yarn, paper streamers, and some fruit and you have a insta-caterpillar birthday success.

How can we celebrate our kid’s birthday without a cake?

My son’s first birthday is fast approaching, and I am debating whether or not to make him a cake. He hasn’t eaten anything with sugar (other than the sugars naturally found in fruit and breastmilk) and I would like to keep it that way as long as possible.

Can you tell me how to get… to a Sesame Street-themed birthday party? (!!)

You guys may remember the Dr. Seuss-themed birthday party shot by Atlanta-based Uzbin Photograhy that we featured a few months ago — and today I’ve got yet another awesome looking kid fete for one-year-old Aya. Aya’s mother, Palwasha, planned a Sesame Street-themed event for her kidlet, and the photos are crazy adorable.

One super sweet monster/ugly doll/rainbow-themed kid’s birthday party

Eryn and Laurie recently shared photos from their daughter Izzie’s birthday that I am SO IN LOVE WITH. They’ve nicknamed their kiddo “Izzie Monster” and felt like a monster party would be the only way to really celebrate. Between the ball pit (kiddo pool + balls = instant kid fun) and coloring wall I think they most definitely did that.

Are dolls appropriate for one-year-olds?

My baby is about to turn one and I’ve been looking online at lists of age-appropriate toys. Simple puzzles, shape-sorter toys, stacking toys, etc, all sound great — but dolls are also on the list. I’m not sure how I feel about that. She’s so young!

Turning five is all the sweeter with a homemade Ms. Pac-Man cake

When my friend invited us to her daughter’s fifth birthday and I found out that it was partially Ms. Pac-Man-themed I soon thereafter asked if I could snap a few shots of the day. The birthday was held at a local pizza shop, which was awesome for the kids and adults in attendance — kids snacked on pizza and adults had coffee and beer. Birthday party win!

A photographer uses monthly photos to document his premature niece’s growth

These photos by Albuquerque-based Justin Thor Simenson have the sweetest story to go with them. His niece, who turned one in November 2011, was born several months premature. Before her birth Justin had mostly focused on fine art, but he began taking Amya’s portrait in the hospital. This turned into a regular thing — every month he took several photos of her. The end result is hundreds of photos of a now quite happy and healthy girl.
