Confronting the terror of being a stay-at-home parent

The terror did not actually strike me immediately. Immediately I was too moon-eyed and sleep-deprived to know what was going on. But slowly, as each day folded back onto itself, as Willow and I both fumbled through our still-awkward dance of deciphering our respective rhythms, I realized that something has fled.

The key to winning photos might be putting a mustache on your newborn

Megan recently shared this photo session that Denise of Boonie Sunshine Photography (she travels between Nashville, TN, and Kansas City, MO) shot session of two-week-old Maximilian. Megan’s husband and Denise are cousins, so the session was part of a baby shower gift. I don’t know about you, but this mustache is pretty much slaying me.

Baby’s got colic? Here are seven ways to help everyone survive it

Sometimes babies cry, and sometimes they cry relentlessly for hours every day. Colic, high needs, or whatever a parent decides to call it — this is a time when humankind’s coping mechanisms are put through the gauntlet. I’ve had two passionate criers, and these are the strategies that helped me be here today with 99% of my sanity.

Why having your family photos shot near train tracks looks rad

I’m totally digging this session from Valdosta, Georgia-based photographer Jacquelynn Buck. This family of four (including a mama with purple hair) definitely knew how to rock their photo session.

Parenting advice I ignored… but now wish I had tried sooner

After getting unsolicited comments from just about everyone you know (and strangers! So fun!), it gets really easy to just start tuning people out — and by people, I mean everyone. Brooke sent me an email saying it might be fun to ask around and find out what parenting advice people have received that actually did work — and it turns out you guys have tons of it.

Sweet organic goodness your offbeatling can wear, play with, or sleep in

The first thing I do whenever I find a new place online filled to the brim with sweet baby-and-toddler clothing goodness is cruise over to the “sale” section. This is half because I have this thing about buying new clothes (why do it when there are so many gently used clothes just lying around) and partly because I can’t bring myself to justify spending a third of my rent on something for my two-and-a-half-year-old to wear. SO color me stoked when I discovered that Wild Dill’s sale section is the cutest thing this side of… wherever they’re from.

May the force be with you: Star Wars-themed family photos featuring Leia breastfeeding an Ewok

The title alone should let you know I am obviously in love with these photos: kids and their mom dressed as characters from Star Wars? A nursing Ewok? YOU GUUUUYS. I was mega thrilled when these shots from Ashlynn Imagery popped up in our Flickr pool, and I’m even more excited to share them.

They might just be one of the hottest families in the universe

I was going through the photos in the Flickr pool for next week’s Montage when BOOM: my eyes landed on this delightful little mini-feast of beauty and love. There are so many things to discuss: how the mom is so lively and has amazing dreads, how the three kidlets are so stylin’ I can’t handle it, and how the dad definitely has a mild Johnny Depp thing going on.
