A rainbow-themed baby shower from rainbow heaven land

I recently hosted a rainbow-themed baby shower for my friend Lindsey. It was pretty much the best kind of sensory overload that exists — everything from the rainbow cake to the slushie dessert was perfect.

Rainbow cakes are all the rage right now — I keep seeing them all over one of my favorites sites, Pinterest! I simply couldn’t resist. The cake is simple to make — just a little time-consuming. All you have to do is get two boxes of white cake mix (or make it from scratch) and divide, as equally as possible, into six different bowls. After divided into bowls, mix however much food coloring you’d like (I got really crazy with the red).

I only had two cake pans, so it took me a lot longer than it would if I had had six. After all of the cakes had been baked and cooled completely, I individually wrapped them in plastic wrap and placed them in the freezer — I left them overnight.

The next day I took them out of the freezer and let the cake layers thaw completely. I iced in-between layers and then around and on top and voila: rainbows!

I added a homemade straw banner to the top, and the cake was finished!

Another rainbow-themed treat I cooked up was this slushie dessert. This was by far the easiest, quickest, most tastily refreshing thing to make. To do it, you take a big pack of ice pops and divide them into individual bowls. Next, crush up the ice pops and put them in a freezer-safe dish. You’ll want to add the layers one at a time — otherwise they’ll melt into each other. Scoop it out with a spoon. NOM NOM!

I added fruit platters and rainbow-sprinkled donuts to complete the food table:

I also made a rainbow banner and hung cloud decorations (with rainbow raindrops, of course) from the trees in the backyard:

The last little bit of decor I added was the guestbook:

If you’re curious, you can see my inspiration board on Pinterest to get your own ideas for a rainbow party. In all, it was an amazing, very colorful day — definitely my idea of a good way to celebrate a baby and mama-to-be!

  1. Thanks for this!! I’m in the middle of planning a rainbow-inspired first birthday for my son, and these are great ideas. I made a practice rainbow cake this week – doubling the recipe is an excellent idea. The cake/icing ratio was wayyyy

  2. Love it! A couple I know is trying to conceive now, and I’d love to do this cake for them when they succeed! I just have to figure out how to make it vegan, hmm….

  3. I love this! Rainbows are gender neutral so this is perfect for a baby shower when the babies sex is a delicious surprise! And i love this visitors book, do you know where they can be bought?
