Families

Our sister site Offbeat Mama launched in 2009, became Offbeat Families in 2012, and was merged into Offbeat Home & Life in 2015. This archive contains all the posts ever published on those sites! We believe that while children change your life forever, being around kids doesn’t necessitate abandoning your identity. We believe in supporting and inspiring parents and caregivers who are moving beyond mainstream visions of parenting. We welcome anyone who’s interested in families, whether you’re pre-parental, in the process of becoming a parent, or choosing to live childfree.

Trish the natch

What’s it like being a pregnant drummer on tour?

So sure, there are rockstar moms … but then there are mamas who are quite literally rockstars! Like Trish Naudon here, drummer for a band out of New York City called The NATCH — and also due to become a mama in August. I tracked Trish down to ask her a few questions about how she manages to mix the perfect cocktail of rockstar and mama — and how her fetus likes it when she’s playing the drums!

Thanks to Viva La Vida Photography for uploading these to the Flickr pool. How hawt is Angelica with her pin-up mama look, and her cutie son Kash? With cheeks like that, he needs a face-bra! Thanks again to Viva La Vida Photography for submitting these. Remember, I loooove seeing professional photos of nontrad parents and […]

What I learned from our first camping trip with a baby

When our son was six months old, my husband and I packed up our new/old Westfalia (aka The Vantasy) and headed to Washington’s Deception Pass for our first family camping trip. Granted, this wasn’t backpacking (just car camping) but I still learned a few things: Cloth diapers are great for the great outdoors, as long […]

Why I’m over and done with breastfeeding

I’ve had some struggles with breastfeeding in the four months since my son was born. One of those struggles was just grappling with the SHOCK that it could be so hard. The newest shock is that I’m throwing in the towel.

Sexy Norwegian DILF rocks the sling

Thanks so much to Kat for submitting this video of Norwegian papa Torstein Greni proudly demonstrating how to correctly use a wrap-style sling to carry his newborn daughter. By the time I got to 1:29, my ovaries exploded out of my nose. Normally I make sure I get the consent of dads or their partners […]

My growing boy and the flowered pants

Last month while on clothing expedition, he selected from a shelf a pair of bold, pink flower-covered cotton pants and asked me to buy them for him. I heard a disembodied voice that could only be mine reply stiffly, “Let’s take a look at these pants. Do these look like boy pants, or girl pants?”

Baby Mood Board

Those of you who “graduated” to Offbeat Mamahood after spending time as Offbeat Brides will appreciate this maternal twist on ye olde bridal inspiration board. -Ariel After 6 months of my husband and I educating ourselves on the X,Y, and Z to prep for our home birth, we decided to have fun and focus a […]

Gamer DILF with pretty, pretty hair

Welcome to this week’s installment of Offbeat Mama’s controversial exercise in friendly male objectification! This time, I present you with Andrew, who may have the prettiest hair of all the DILFs I’ve featured: Thanks to Andrew’s partner Junipur for submitting this shot to the Offbeat Mama pool. As she says, “I think he is a […]
