Dorky middle class girl learns to cruise a longboard, gains zero street cred

I needed a longboard. Like, for years, I felt a very compelling need for a cruiser. They called to me, until I finally took the plunge and bought Cloris. Even though I’d never ridden a board in my life…

Create your own indoor camping snooze haven for your kidlets

In our neck of the woods, it has been hot outdoors — which means lots of swimming and sweating and indoor projects. We have been tackling our boys’ rooms this past week, moving the two big boys together in their “camping” room and the baby to his own nursery. Our boys are constantly making tents and forts and since my husband Alex built a fort for the boys, it was my turn to make the tents.

Log cabin contemplations: hanging out at a commune

Last week I wrote about some of the weirdness of moving back into my childhood home for a month. It’s a little different than it was when I was an isolated only child growing up here, though: my childhood home is now a commune and functioning eco-retreat type thing called Sacred Groves. At any given time, there are a mix of a half dozen to a dozen adults and children living here, walking the paths I used to haunt alone. Sometimes it’s awesome, and sometimes it’s, well, a little overwhelming.

I won the battle to grow my own food — even though I live on a boat

I’ve always loved food: I was taught to bake from a young age and can whip up a mean Sunday roast or Victoria sponge. I come from a farming family so I’ve always felt aware of where food comes from.

Unfortunately, living on a boat makes growing my own a difficult task — but we’ve finally found a solution.

I’m a fat woman interested in living small. What do I need to know?

I love your posts about tiny spaces and tiny homes and I dream of someday having a tiny place of my very own. As a fat woman, though, I wonder if that would be a comfortable situation. I’d love to go RVing full-time, honestly, I’m not sure if I’d be cozy or cramped.
