A very photo-heavy guide to sewing a faux gDiaper cover from an upcycled shirt

Today I’m going to show you how I make my upcycled mock gDiaper cover. This tutorial features a size medium diaper.

For this project you will need:

*A large knit shirt (or knit/cotton interlock fabric)
*One 1-1/4″ sport knit elastic for waistbands
*3/8″ knit elastic for leg elastics
*Snap tape — these are compatible with the brand name liners and can be purchased here (the evenly spaced tape with 1 1/8″ between each snap)
*11″ of hook and 5″ of loop touch tape or Velcro

Got a princess in the house? Here’s how you can make a felt and tulle princess hat

I am the mother of a (surprisingly, at least to me) very girly-girl, and I have very reluctantly entered the sparkly, pink, flowery world of princesses and twirly skirts and all other such fancy things. Since this seems to be all that my wee girl thinks about these days, I’m just going with it, trying to also emphasize the importance of independence, smarts, strength, and a good old-fashioned mess. While it’s far from my everyday, fancy is quite fun! So I’m letting my sweet one guide me on this sparkly adventure.

Wanna make a rockabilly head scarf for your baby? Here’s how you do it

I was in the middle of making a headband for my daughter when I started playing with the excess fabric and ended up making her a head scarf — I liked the result, but wanted to make a pattern so I could produce something a little more polished. Here’s what I came up with.

Keep Truckin’: Gus and his colorful John Lennon and Jerry Garcia-inspired toddler bedroom

In early September our son, Gus, turned two whopping years old and moved into a brand new bedroom. This is by far the best room Gus has ever lived in. It is totally and completely set up for him. Puzzles, blocks, books, dress up clothes, stuffed friends…they’re all so easy to reach! It’s amazing what a good set of built-ins can do for a toddler!

Upcycle your old t shirts into baby bibs

When my son was born, I had the biggest distaste for baby bibs. I hated how “babyish” they looked, yet I knew how functional they were for drool, food, and so on. So, I came up with an alternative: bibs made out of upcycled shirts! So much better. You can make these with either adult graphic tees or toddler button-down shirts.

Watercolor leaves: an art project for elementary schoolers

This is a simple, yet lovely art lesson that builds upon the principles of watercolor applications. My fifth grade students used liquid watercolor paints, “black” glue (white school glue mixed with black paint) and 9″ x 12″ 90 lb watercolor paper to achieve this lovely project.

An inexpensive rainy day project: DIY glimmer paint in two steps

I wasn’t sure if my son and I would ever attempt another colorful DIY creation after the Great Rainbow Slime Fail of 2012, but this recipe for DIY glimmer paint seemed too good to pass up. It’s sparkly AND colorful? COME ON NOW.

4 Halloween crafts your kids can make out of recycled materials

I was recently inspired by this list of kid’s Halloween crafts you can make out of recycled materials — so much so that I decided to let my three-year-old try out one of the suggestions.
