Oh hey, I don't just spend my time at ren faires, I also spend them geeking out at pop culture conventions. Because of course I do. If you've never been to a pop culture convention and are of the geekier persuasion, you might be missing out on some major fun. There are hundreds of pop culture conventions around the world that span from traditional comic book conventions to book conventions, anime conventions, and specialty conventions of all flavors. If you're heading to your own local convention for the first time, I've got some basics rules and tips to make it more enjoyable. How do you get into cosplay?

I'm a sucker for costuming and drooling over amazing cosplay pictures online. In October my local bike shop is having a "tweed ride" involving riding in period costumes, and I want to use this to give a try at cosplay (Victorian Mary Watson in her badass riding habit, for those who wonder). I don't have an inkling where to start. I can sew, but should I sew my whole costume? Alter some pieces of garment? Are there tacit rules for cosplaying? Is the devil really in the details?
