Ooooh, we’ve received a little more photo magic via Two Bright Lights again! This set of photos is of photographer Ilene Squires‘s best friend and her niece and nephew. I love the idea of an auntie or uncle (or family friend!) having his or her own photo session with the kids — it’s something you don’t see a lot!
Says Ilene:
Cathy and I have been friends for just about a decade now, which is hard to believe. We met while rooming together abroad and have been travel buddies since, venturing to far-off lands as adventure geeks. Cathy now resides in Houston and we always make it a point to spend some quality time together over the holidays in our shared hometown of Los Angeles. Cathy has been so gracious in supporting my studio by scheduling annual portraits of her niece and nephew. This year, we enjoyed a very warm December day at the Santa Monica Pier where we played in the sand and agreed on our mutual feeling of “maturity” while escorting the little ones onto the rides at the pier.

Sometimes families are the people we chose rather than the people we are actually related to.
As a nanny, I love both having photos of myself and “my” kiddos, and giving them to the kids and parents.
LOVE THIS!! in hawaii, where much of our family is hanai (or informally adopted/chosen), our aunties and uncles play such a HUGE part in our son’s life! they are the critical mass of our cozy village and they deserve to have their love and dedication to our son documented as well! aunty/uncle photo shoots might be holiday gifts next year!!
