Wayyy up in the north of Minnesota — 26 miles from Canada — is the Naniboujou Lodge, built in the 1920s to host rich white dudes’ hunting parties.
The Shining-esque hotel and restaurant is still chugging along, and still has its AMAZING and original painted ceiling. It has never been repainted! It looks like it could have been designed yesterday…and WOW I suddenly want to paint almost-neon stripes on the ceiling of my front room. But would this work in a low-ceilinged space, or is that just a recipe for headaches?

Eee, this reminds me of some of the beautiful palaces in Seoul! I love painted ceilings.
It could work in a smaller space if you did wider stripes maybe.
And kept the colors somewhat light, I think. Lighter colors keep a room looking big, and I think darker colors could get oppressive. Especially since we’re used to white ceilings anyway (sadly).
Oh the Naniboujou is famous here in Minnesota!
I love the Naniboujou lodge! I had lunch there years ago. It’s really an amazing place.
Wow! Love this! The cottage we’re buying has really low cellings and i’ve been thinking about painting them. I guess if you played on the fact that the room would feel smaller and turned the room into a really cosy snug or just picked a couple of quite light colours it might work. Dulux in the UK do light reflecting paints that might be a good idea for this.
