True story: At the beginning of August I dyed my hair this really pretty lavender, by mid August — even with adding my hair color to my conditioner — it was faded beyond all color recognition. Strangers went from saying “I love your hair!” to “So, what color was your hair?” So depressing.

That is why I’m beyond stoked that oVertone is our newest sponsor, because it’s is a line of vegan color depositing conditioners that keeps your fantasy hair color looking vibrant and beautiful. Their mission: to end hair fading for good.

oVertone vegan color depositing conditioner

oVertone was created by Maegan and Liora, who put their brightly-colored heads together and concocted a product that both of them had always wanted — a conditioner that would heal hair between dye jobs and keep it looking as bright on day 60 as it did on day one. As they put it, “We want to be bold, AND look the part 24/7, no matter how long ago our last salon trip happened.” oVertone is an end to cold showers and a reintroduction to heat styling. It’s a way to keep your hair healthy and colorful every day, no matter how often you shampoo.

But how is that possible!?…

overtone keeps your hair color vibrant

oVertone has eighteen different color combinations and two types of conditioner — a daily conditioner and a weekly treatment — to meet your fantasy hair needs. They offer red, orange, pink, blue, purple, and teal conditioners in three different intensity levels: Pastel, Vibrant, and Extreme.

Simply swap out the conditioner you’re using, replace with oVertone, and you have an easy solution to keep things colorful. You can even mix the conditioners together to create your own custom shades! The best part: there’s literally nothing in oVertone that can damage your hair, so you can apply as often as you need to!

So why is oVertone better than the common “cut dye with conditioner” method?

For starters, oVertone packs a much stronger punch. Their conditioners will actually deposit much more color than a diluted dye mix. Additionally, their pigments deposit faster (imagine a three minute color processing time) and are way less messy (no mixing yourself). To top it off, they are completely non-damaging — while mixing your conditioner with dye can actually negate the effects of the conditioner, oVertone conditioners are all-healing all the time.

  1. Would this be a good bet for someone with naturally light hair that wanted to do a temporary, non-damaging dye to “try out” a color? Could I just use the conditioner all over to see how I like a shade, and then naturally let it wash out by using a normal conditioner afterwards? How long do you think it might take to wash out? Thanks for making a cool product!

    • Hi Robyn,

You can definitely use our conditioners over light brown hair (in fact, we have strand tests showing you what it will look like! Check out the individual product pages for photos), however the color will be slightly different; the pigments in our conditioners will blend with the tone of your hair.

The color will definitely wash out, but we notice that our pigments have some pretty great staying power. 🙂 You might need to use a really stripping shampoo to take most of it out quickly if that’s your goal. It also depends on which formula you get – for example, an Extreme formula will last much longer after one application (and show up more strongly) than a Pastel formula.

If you have questions about specific colors and your hair, feel free to shoot us a note!

  2. I LOVE my dyed red hair but I loathe going to the salon so I ordered the hell out of a sample pack. The red strand test is exactly what I’m looking for my dark blonde hair to be so I’m SO EXCITED TO TRY THIS!

  3. Ah! WHERE was this when my hair was bright pink (and then red, purple, red again, etc)?! I have no current plans to dye my head, again, but if I ever do I am keeping this in mind. All those red-based colors I used to use faded so quickly it was ridiculous! This product sounds amazing.

  4. Hiya! Oh, how exciting! I haven’t dyed my hair in 10 years because the chemicals make my curly hair so unhappy- but this changes everything!

I have medium brown hair- darker than the light brown strands I see for your strand tests, but not super dark either. Which of your colours do you think would stand out the most without lightening my hair first? I don’t expect anything super-bold, just something noticeable. (I am also not picky about the colour. 😉 )

    • Hey!

So glad to hear that you’re going to throw some boldness back into your life! Our Extreme formulas are DEFINITELY the way to go. I would say your best best are:

      Extreme Teal
      Extreme Red
      Extreme Orange
      Extreme Pink

If you have darker hair, make sure you use a lot of product to really saturate the hair. I also personally recommend putting on a shower cap to let the heat help it soak in. We even have one client that uses a hair dryer on her head for about 5 minutes with the product on to help it really appear on her dark hair. Best of luck!

  5. OKAY. I’ve been interested in dying my hair for ages (it’s a medium brown color) and the only color that’s ever been added is red kool-aide. How does this work with hair that’s never been bleached or dyed before? I don’t even know where to begin- do I go to a salon and get my hair colored the color I want and then use this product to keep it healthy and vibrant or can I just start by using this conditioner? And would the difference of bleaching your hair versus leaving it natural and then dying it be dramatic?

    • Hi Mariah!

I’m going to break your comment down into points to make sure I answer all of your questions fully!

      1. How does this work on hair that has never been bleached or dyed?

It will certainly deposit color onto your hair, but it won’t be the same as on bleached or already colored hair. We have strand tests on the website (aka: our product applied once to strands of both platinum and light brown hair) to help you guess how your hair will react. If you have questions about specific colors with your hair, shoot us an email and we’d be glad to help you guess!

The other part is that we’ve noticed the healthier your hair is, the less able it is to accept the pigment in our conditioners. One of the ways that traditional hair dye impacts the color of your hair is by using damaging ingrediants – such as harsh alcohols – to open the cuticle (that is to say the strand) of your hair to allow it to accept color in. If your hair is damaged in general (say by heat styling, age, you have delicate hair in general, etc) you will notice that adding any color to it at all is easier. Because our conditioners are COMPLETELY NON DAMAGING they depend on the state of your hair currently to how far they will color as used on their own.

      2. Do I go to a salon and get my hair colored, then use oVertone to maintain?

This is personally my favorite option. This way you ensure that you get the color you want, and then you can use the oVertone system as a maintenance product – something it is definitely VERY good at, and designed to do! You can even bring oVertone with you to the salon and use it to help color your hair at the outset – we’ve had clients who have done that before. Just be sure to tell your stylist/colorist what it is and what it does!

      3. Can I start just by using this conditioner?

Certainly you can, if not just to see if you can get your desired results without going to a salon first.

      4. How does bleaching my hair affect results?

Any time you start from a bleached strand you’re going to get bolder color! See our strand tests to compare how the same conditioner reacts to platinum and light brown hair.

Let me know if I missed anything, or if you have further questions!

  6. Y’all.

My bottle of oVertone in Extreme Pink came today…IT IS TOTALLY THE BEST THING EVER.

I was purposely waiting to do my normal 4 week touch up, just to see how bright oVertone could make my hair, and I am so pleased! I went from mildly-Barbie pink with some serious sun-faded sections to HOT HOT PINK in my first use!

GO. BUY THIS THING. Make the hair goddesses happy!

  7. I have a ‘natural’ looking red dyed on top (a clariol # 6) and extreme purple on the bottom. I’m unsure if I should look at a red or orange to give my top color a boost in between dying. Any suggestions?

    • Hey!

Sounds like you’re a perfect match for our sample pack! I would suggest grabbing samples in our Vibrant Red, Vibrant Orange, and Extreme Red to play around with – a combination of these may give you the results you need on top (and better to play around with in sample form).

By the way – that combo sounds MAGNIFICENT. Be sure to tweet us a pic sometime!

  8. I bought one for me, and one for my girlfriend. It arrived last weekend. My girlfriend started using hers and she has super thick hair — she thinks maybe she’ll get another two uses out of the bottle. I was hoping there was either a way to buy a bigger bottle, or do you have any tips for suuuuper thick, long hair to make this go further?

My hair is thin so I’m not too worried, but I can’t see buying a bottle of this for her weekly. o_o

    • Hi Anna,

We’ve had a couple of requests for a 16oz bottle, and are definitely looking into our options there. Stay tuned with social media and our newsletter for updates!

      Cheers,
      Liora

  9. OK — so here’s my review:

    Positives:
-Great color. Most effective color-deposit type I’ve ever used. Awesome. This may outweigh any and all negatives for many folks.
-Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to apply without looking like you fingerpainted your shower or yourself.

    Negatives:
-Packaging:the weekly treatment leaked all over the box. I only lost 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup, not a big deal, but because of the nature of the stuff, man, what a mess.
-The pump on the daily conditioner is…lacking. The first time I used it, it was great, until it had pulled out all the conditioner in a shaft down the center of the bottle. It’s thick enough that just shaking the bottle didn’t really knock it down in the bottle either. I added a little water to no avail (I guess it made it a little thinner, but the pump still didn’t actually pump) and I finally ended up microwaving it for 35 seconds each time I used it. That makes it thin enough the pump can pull some out of the bottle, but it’s still not a full squirt. This would have been better served by some sort of squeeze tube or bottle.

-It’s mentioned elsewhere, but I’ll say it again, it stains the tub (mine is a fiberglass enclosure)

-Can’t go swimming with it. Didn’t occur to me, but when you go swimming, you end up dripping tinted water. So unless you want to use a swim cap….it’s right out.

-The scent is mint. Everyone was raving about the scent – I’m not a fan of mint. I realize, though, that’s my damage and not a universal

-As someone more recently noted, you go through it fast.

My conclusion? I’m going to hang on to it as a stopgap for when I need to look less washed out late in the haircolor cycle, but it’s not the replacement for my Clairol I’d hoped for. Of its type it’s the best I’ve found, and I may try one of the more fun colors (BLUE!!!) sometime when I don’t have to be in a relatively conservative workplace for a few days.

    • Hey!

Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us, and we know that this takes time and effort to do. Thanks so much – we really appreciate it!

We are VERY sorry to hear about the leak! Please email us at [email protected] so we can make that right. We are already taking measures to prevent that happening again.

Also, thank you so much for letting us know about your experience with the pump! We have a couple of experiments and tests in mind to see how we can improve that experience.

Lastly – Blue is awesome. You should definitely try blue. 😉

      Warm Regards,
      Liora

  10. Out of curiosity, is your company planning on making any other colors any time soon?

I’m just planning on coloring my hair a green color, and I would absolutely love to be able to use this product, except that there’s no green color option yet.

    • Hey!

Green is definitely something we are looking to include in our line! Stay in the know by following us on social media and signing up for our newsletter – there will definitely be announcements (and balloons? pony rides?)

      Best,
      Liora

  11. Since this is where I found out about this, figured I’d leave a comment/review!

I’ve most recently had a purple hair layer, that turned half-sky blue pretty immediately, and over time had faded to a pretty awesome aqua colour. I ordered the Extreme Purple, and after one application of the weekly treatment, BAM! PURPLE AGAIN!

Now I’m using Daily Conditioner to keep the purple up! Love it!

Based on Maegan’s previous comment, I used gloves for the weekly, but ended up testing daily without. Yes…my hands get purple. But by the time I’m done my shower, they’re fine (and I’m super pale).

Only downside… alert to any Canadians out there, I got hit with a ~$40 customs charge for import duty on top of the shipping and USD prices. That said, still super worth it. LOVE this product!

Thanks guys! (Both OBH and oVertone!)

  12. What about sweating? I’m very excited to try this as I will be dyeing my hair purple again soon and was dreading dealing with the fading, however I work in a very hot warehouse. After reading an earlier comment about swimming, I wanted to check to see if there was any bleeding with sweat?

    Thanks,
    Kelly

    • Hi Kelly,

There is some potential for a little bleeding with sweat, but not bad! If you’re concerned, simply be sure to thoroughly rinse oVertone from your hair after applying (wait till the water runs clear). For an extra precaution, you can also rinse your hair before going into work if you’re nervous.
