New Year’s

A year of resolutions — one for each month

I love the excuse that a new calendar provides for encouraging me to try new things, push myself, and break out of bad habits. But even though I’ve heard that it takes just three weeks to develop a new habit, my new year’s resolutions always break down around week five or six. So this year, instead of attempting a 365-day resolution, I am considering trying something different: twelve one-month challenges.

The lazy girl’s guide to throwing a New Year’s Eve party

I am all for elaborate, well-planned bashes, but sometimes ain’t nobody got the time for that. With the holiday season in full swing, between getting ready for Santa, work being busy at the end of the calendar year, and other commitments, there is just no room in our days to Martha Stewart-ize this party we want to throw. So I threw together a party game plan with minimal effort, and am sharing with you the fruits of my (limited) labor.

How to use your powers — and parties — for good

On New Year’s Eve, we raised over $2,000 for a local food bank by dressing up, showing off, and getting cheerfully smashed with 30 or so of our best buds. We don’t have loads of cash, a fancy venue, or any (particularly) super powers, so how’d we pull off this feat? By focusing on what we do have.

Don’t use January to beat yourself up

January always seems to be about making new starts. Quitting things, cutting down on things, doing more of other things… I, of course, thought I was above falling for the hype. I’m an Offbeat Homie, I don’t need to buy your exercise video just because it’s January! Obviously.

What’s your goal this new year?

Here we go headlong into 2012, Homies! And when’s better than the last Friday of the old year to try out something new? Open thread, ya’ll!

Naked scientists and ways the world might end: 5 calendars for 2012

Now it is the best time of the year: the END of the year. It’s fascinating that we as a people periodically say “this period of time is over. BEGIN NEW PERIOD!” Isn’t it? As December 31st ends, we mentally partition off the year, old habits, and new goals. January 1st isn’t a different day than December 31 in any way, but if FEELS new.

AND YOU GUYS, I HAVE BEEN SAVING CALENDARS FOR YOU FOR SIX MONTHS!

Non-sucky Christmas songs to take back your ears

Scenario: I’m having a holiday party and need party-music-that-sounds-cool-but-also-wintry.

Scenario: My cube-mate’s been playing Christmas tunes since Dec. 1. If I hear Mariah Carey sing All I Want for Christmas is You once more I will snap. I’d like to take over the airwaves with my own mix for a day — what’s a good list to work from?

Scenario: I JUST LOVE CHRISTMAS SONGSSS!

Offbeat Home has solutions to all the scenarios — songs to stream and songs to buy that are full of jinglebells.
