Halloween recipe round-up: appetizers, snacks, and desserts

Let’s talk about Halloween FOOD! I found a few cool recipes around the internet — you’ve got your caramel toffee fruit dip, meringue ghosts, and candy corn cupcakes right here, but this list is HARDLY exhaustive. There’s a whole world of Halloween eating goodness out there! After you’ve read these and been inspired, leave your favorite recipes in the comments and share the spooktacular knowledge.

What should we do at my Halloween party?

I’d like to ask Offbeat Homies how they party at Halloween.

I’m hosting the party for my group this year, and … what do people DO at Halloween parties?

The family that Star Wars costumes together stays together

I have two boys who are very particular about costumes — it is pointless for me to even offer suggestions. It is just not a battle worth fighting for me. A few years ago they decided they wanted to be Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker. I’m not the biggest fan of dressing up, but we found ourselves invited to a costume party at which EVERYONE was supposed to wear costumes — kids and adults. I relinquished control and let the boys decide what the rest of the family should be… and of course they chose Star Wars characters.

Calling all aspiring flappers, Marios, and baby dragons: let’s talk about what your family is going to be for Halloween

Who wants to do some Halloween window shopping?! Even if you already think you know what your various family members are going as this year (please tell me SOMEONE has a family that’s all going as Harry Potter characters), you might be pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming amount of awesome that’s available out there.

Our New Year’s Day baby was nearly born into the toilet

There’s a lot you don’t know as a first time mom and nothing showed how unprepared I was than my son Owen’s actual arrival. On New Year’s Eve in 2010 my husband and I met friends for a celebratory dinner. At dinner I ate an entire appetizer, entree, and dessert — in retrospect this probably should have been indicative of impending labor since I typically struggled to finish half an entree. Early that morning I wandered out of bed to use the bathroom. I had become used to needing to pee at least three times a night, and right as I entered the bathroom I felt a gush of water exit. I looked down and thought, “Hmmm…”

Our half-Mexican daughter was born at home on Dia de los Muertos

On Halloween night 2010, at 12:57am I rolled over in bed and felt my bag of waters breaking. I managed to get out of bed without getting the bed wet and as I was running to the bathroom, water gushed out all over the kitchen and bathroom floor. It was a gush like in the movies. As I was running I yelled to my wife Liz, “My water just broke!”

JCPenney’s Father’s Day ad is rocking my world

All of a sudden I’m feeling like I need to mosey down to my local mall and peruse JC Penney for all that JC Penney offers — and you can thank their latest Father’s Day campaign for that.

It’s almost Father’s Day: let’s get our budget-friendly geeky gifting on via ThinkGeek

I’m a big-time fan of giving gifts that have little to do with parental roles: many of the comments on gifts for Butch moms are the perfect example of this. Both of you KNOW that you’re parents — so why celebrate a day about being a parent with kid-themed gifts? AS SUCH, here are a few of my favorite gifts for the geek you’re crushing on in that partner-for-life kind of way.
