Breast pumps & messy rooms: The newborn photos I wish I had taken

When my son was born I was already a photographer. I knew I wanted and needed to capture these first few precious weeks. So, apart from arranging for a photographer to come and take a few, I also prepared all my gear and resolved to practice taking the most perfect newborn pictures.

What I didn’t know then was those “cute-baby-on-a-white-blanket-curled-up-in-a-perfect-pose” pictures would not be the ones I will treasure in five years time.

Sexy high-waisted panties that cover your whole ass

Victoria secret keeps flashing in my facebook feed, and as much as I appreciate a hungry-looking butt feasting on thongs, that look is not for me. But I also want to look good in and like my underwear at the same time. Fruit of the Loom’s cheap enormous cotton panties (*though I love me some natural fibres) are not cutting it. Help? Be my magical undie-god-mothers?

Things to know before you bring potbellied pigs into your urban homestead

Are you thinking of adding a potbellied pig to your homestead? I have had my two potbellied pigs Clem and Tubbs chilling in my backyard for about three years now, and here is my advice to help you know if you are ready to bring a pig into your family.

The Doll House tour: You must see (and maybe move into?) this manic pixie dream home

The moment I saw this video pop up on Facebook feed, I thought “the Homies must needs see this!!!” This tour is of a home called “The Doll House” in Hollywood. And yes, it’s wholly appropriately named.

Owning dairy goats: How I became the “crazy goat lady”

I am an Agricultural Science teacher, and a homeowner, complete with eight whole acres to use for sustainable farming. While the garden was put in, and laying hens purchased (chickens are the homesteading gate way drug), I couldn’t forget my fascination with the dairy goats I had met! So I began researching…

How do you announce your adoption plans?

My husband and I just decided and made the first step to adopt a child. This is a super exciting time in our life, and I’d like to share it with people. But I feel like a simple Facebook post just isn’t the right way or doesn’t do the announcement justice. I’m wondering if any offbeat readers have any suggestions/feedback/or advice on announcing you’re adopting a child?

Open letter to my teenage self about sex

My “official” first time was pretty much by-the-book. It got better with practice, but I wish someone had spoken with me more honestly about what to expect. If I could write a letter to my teenage self with some advice about how to go about sex, this is what I would say…

Slow cooker green chile pulled pork: it’s a gift for Future You!

So… This pork. It’s great in tacos, nachos, or burritos. It’s decadent over cheese grits. I’ve eaten it happily in a bowl of ramen. I suspect it would be great in tamales. Put it in your quesadilla! Put it in your breakfast burrito! Add some to your huevos rancheros! Put it on small roll with shredded cabbage and call it a slider! Enchiladas? Sure! Eaten cold from a bowl straight from the fridge because you can’t even be bothered? Absolutely! It’s dang versatile, and it freezes beautifully. Make a big batch and freeze some. Future You will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
