Families

Our sister site Offbeat Mama launched in 2009, became Offbeat Families in 2012, and was merged into Offbeat Home & Life in 2015. This archive contains all the posts ever published on those sites! We believe that while children change your life forever, being around kids doesn’t necessitate abandoning your identity. We believe in supporting and inspiring parents and caregivers who are moving beyond mainstream visions of parenting. We welcome anyone who’s interested in families, whether you’re pre-parental, in the process of becoming a parent, or choosing to live childfree.

Does anybody have any extensive experience navigating mass transit with a baby (and everything that goes with the baby) in tow? I don’t want to become the woman with the huge stroller on the bus who all the other passengers hate!

Kate and Zach’s blissful baby-on-the-way maternity session

I love love love when photographers and couples connect and form a relationship that lasts over years. Amy Ann (of Amy Ann Photography) shot Kate and Zach’s queer Jewish wedding last year, and then recently shot their maternity session a few weeks ago.

Honoring veterans with three of our favorite offbeat military mama posts

Today many people are celebrating at least one of three holidays: Remembrance Day (in Canada), Armistice Day (in France and Belgium), and Veteran’s Day (in the United States). I guess for everyone else… it’s still Friday! We thought it’d be appropriate to mark the day on Offbeat Mama by revisiting a few of our favorite military-related posts.

The key to winning photos might be putting a mustache on your newborn

Megan recently shared this photo session that Denise of Boonie Sunshine Photography (she travels between Nashville, TN, and Kansas City, MO) shot session of two-week-old Maximilian. Megan’s husband and Denise are cousins, so the session was part of a baby shower gift. I don’t know about you, but this mustache is pretty much slaying me.
