How do you get into cosplay?
I’m a sucker for costuming and drooling over amazing cosplay pictures online. In October my local bike shop is having a “tweed ride” involving riding in period costumes, and I want to use this to give a try at cosplay (Victorian Mary Watson in her badass riding habit, for those who wonder). I don’t have an inkling where to start. I can sew, but should I sew my whole costume? Alter some pieces of garment? Are there tacit rules for cosplaying? Is the devil really in the details?

This is big news. Maybe even the biggest news in my entire life. Okay, maybe in Offbeat Home & Life’s entire life. Move over that time Pee-wee Herman liked our Banana Dogs. Here comes our news: Tina Fucking Fey reads Offbeat Home & Life! And then talked about it on TV! With Seth Meyers!
Pickles, pirates, and busty ladies: what to expect at a Renaissance fair
As a huge fantasy geek, dressing up in period costume, eating giant dill pickles on sticks, and watching sexy people joust is my happy place. I also wrongly assumed that everyone else in the world was attending their own local Ren fairs/fests and huzzah-ing along with me. Fellow editor, Chris, started asking me all these questions and was worried she’d be ridiculed for her lack of knowledge of olde-y world-y things (spoiler: hell no!). We decided that I should write up a primer for preparing to embark on a geeky trip back in time. Here’s what to expect at your first Renaissance fair.
How do you get into reading comic books?
I’ve been thinking about reading comic books (or graphic novels? Are they different?) for a while, but I just don’t know where to start. Can the Homies suggest some comics and a good issue to start with?
Why I’m totally ok being the 40-year-old at the music festival
Here I am, almost 20 summers after my first big music festival. It’s time to confront that I may be the equivalent of the old guy at the club, and why I’m totally ok with that. Here’s why.
6 valuable life (and parenting) lessons that I learned from Disney’s Frozen
Our house, like so many others, has been inundated with the Disney phenomenon that is the movie Frozen. However, after many viewings and even more sing-a-longs, rather than tire of it, I feel like I’m finally seeing it for the deep and powerful parable that it is. Because, like any truly powerful storytelling, the magic comes in hearing these message again and again…
Rule the porcelain throne with a Game of Thrones-themed bathroom
My favorite thing on Earth is coming back into my life this Sunday: Game of Fucking Thrones! So I celebrated in the very best, most Megan way possible.
DIY these sonic screwdriver earrings!
Homie aaronanderin uploaded these sonic screwdriver earrings to our Flickr pool. Apparently they were made for a Doctor Who swap. How clever are these!?
