Families

Our sister site Offbeat Mama launched in 2009, became Offbeat Families in 2012, and was merged into Offbeat Home & Life in 2015. This archive contains all the posts ever published on those sites! We believe that while children change your life forever, being around kids doesn’t necessitate abandoning your identity. We believe in supporting and inspiring parents and caregivers who are moving beyond mainstream visions of parenting. We welcome anyone who’s interested in families, whether you’re pre-parental, in the process of becoming a parent, or choosing to live childfree.

Why do I need to get married just because we have a kid?

From the second I knew about my son’s upcoming arrival, the same questions kept coming up, the biggest one being, “Are you married?”

After I answered no, everyone seemed to assume that my son’s father was out of the picture. To their surprise, my son’s father is very much involved.

Respecting myself and my step-daughter’s mother

We live in a world where being raised in a home with both of your parents is becoming a fairy tale. I am one of a rare breed whose parents are happily married and after thirty years are still very much in love. When I was a precocious teenager and acting out in school I found it funny to justify my actions with sarcastic coos of “I’m sorry, I’m having a difficult time right now. I’m coming to terms with coming from a two parent household.”

How to change a diaper on a plane

I am a frequent reader of Offbeat Mama & am expecting my first child in May. My husband and I will be traveling with the baby in July, when the baby is about 8 weeks old. We’re flying from the East Coast to Denver. I keep seeing advice on dealing with breastfeeding while traveling, and […]

This week’s DILF, Mr. James Hearn

It’s been a while since I featured an offbeat DILF. I got some feedback from one reader who said the feature was “so wrong and trashy” and I got a little gun-shy. BUT! I just can’t stay away from the pictures of hottie dads, so despite some of you thinking this feature is “like Hooters […]

It takes a Village to Raise a Stepson

Most people who know me, know that I had a son before my “real” son. Although he came from a different mom, I still consider him my son. I try not to say “stepson” because I don’t want him to feel like he’s apart from my son or me and my husband.

A water birth story

I floated through my labor, literally and figuratively. I spent seven hours in a big round tub, making my own waves as each contraction made waves through my body.

DIY Scrapbox Memories Tutorial by Giddy Giddy

Shadowboxes and scrapbooks are excellent ways to hang on to those little items, photos and knick-knacks that we hold so dear. This kitschy, simple tutorial that I spied over at Giddy Giddy is all of those things wrapped up in one… plus it doubles as fantastic wall art! What’s so great about this project is […]
