Since we can’t all dine together like one big happy family, we can at least attempt to feed each other via these Homie-approved recipes.

Time machine cooking: Freeze your tomato sauce

Make your pasta sauce in bulk and then freeze it. The result is a stack of Sauce Bricks you can pull out to use whenever you need ’em, thus sparing the time required to make it from scratch. We’ve successfully used (defrosted) frozen sauce not just for pasta, but also lasagna, manicotti, and pizza.

Fart-free spicy bean salad

I have to have protein or I get cranky and tired. It seems the best non-meat protein option is the musical fruit… beans. After doing some research I heard that a natural cure for gas is cumin seeds. So I got to work on a recipe that incorporated cumin with the beans to come up with a dish that had fewer musical side-effects.

A Megan-simple sesame chicken salad

This is a great salad to pack for lunches. It’ll keep for about a week in the fridge, but I like it so much it’s never lasted that long. It’s also a very forgiving recipe, so add more of the ingredients you like and cut back those you don’t like or don’t have.

Yummy, lactose-free mac ‘n cheese

Last night we feasted on ooey-gooey mac n’ cheese fit for my husband’s digestive system. He developed lactose-intolerance in the past couple of years, which effectively put an end to his cheese-fiend ways. I adapted this recipe from The New Vegan Table, and it’s an awesome recipe. But made even better with my variation.

Quick, no fuss tomato and pesto sauce

I love cooking but some days I just can’t be bothered to make a five-course dinner with fancy-schmancy ingredients. This recipe makes ± 4 servings, and is so quick that the pasta can be done at the same time the sauce is done. So no long hangry waits!

Use your crockpot to make chicken tacos

My name is Mich and I’m addicted to my crockpot. Here’s my favourite, cheap and easy crockpot recipe: chicken tacos. This recipe makes eight meals for me and my husband — that’s 16 portions for about $14 (I buy chicken when it’s on sale and freeze it).

Megan-simple browned butter and Mizithra pasta

Ever since I discovered how easy it is to make browned butter and Mizithra pasta, it has become a monthly staple. I would have it more often, but it isn’t really all that healthy… but it sure is delicious. However, it is so easy even Megan can do it!

Magical sickness-fixing pureed celery soup

The only good thing about getting sick is that my husband always makes me this awesome celery soup. I can make a mean soup from scratch (it’s kind of my thing) but nothing compares to his magical sickness fixing celery soup. It sounds odd, looks kind of gross and has the consistency of applesauce but it tastes amazing.
