Check out Homie Jsaxena’s DIYed wall mural. She created this work of wall art out of electrical tape, based on the 1972 Vignelli subway map. Wanna see how she did it?
Here’s the very beginning of the mural’s progress. Starting with the big black tape outline…
…and then adding the smaller colored lines on top…
And finally here’s the finished wall mural in all its glory! I even love how the red pillow on the couch picks up the red lines in the mural. And can we talk about how this a great example of no-damage decor that makes a HUGE impact?

I like this idea and would like to know how she got the lines on the wall. Did she freehand it?
Hey! My boyfriend and I printed out the map (here http://www.doobybrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/vignelli-subway_final.jpg), which is pretty much a perfect square. Our space was 8’x8′, so we just measured the separate lines on the boroughs and scaled up. There was a fair amount of freehand, just because the tape was so thick, and all the subway lines were freehanded, with lots of looking back at the original map. I hope that helps!

Oh oh oh oh oh, I hate to be a downer, but if you’re renting your property, you might want to be really really careful with electrical tape. Temporarily, it’s not so bad, but over time it will leave some gnarly, hard to remove stains on your walls. I used electrical tape to tape up some art on the walls of my last apartment, and upon removal, I was scrubbing for what felt like days and still had dark spots where the strips had been. I bet it wouldn’t be so bad with the lighter colored tape, but the black was pretty terrible.
It’s beautiful, though, really it is. But please do learn from my mistake if you really need no-damage decor.
I was going to ask the question “how hard is it to get off?” but you answered it first. It’s an awesome idea and it looks great but on my white rental walls I don’t think it would work. Looks fantastic though!

I was just wondering about whether it would be hard to ~remove~ (careful wording) – I have a painted fake brick wall in my room that nothing will stick to, but I imagine electrical tape might work… That being said, tape related innuendo just made my day.

This is fantastic! I have a HUGE, blank wall in my apartment that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with, and I may have to try this with the London Undergrond (admitted Anglophile, here).
I agree with what Neno said about electrical tape gumming up walls. Maybe gaffer tape? Washi tape? Ribbons? There’s got to be some other alternatives. I’ll definitely be looking into this!
Painters tape would probably work well. The challenge would be to find enough different colors.
