A Very Hungry first birthday party!

We hosted our son’s first birthday party in August 2012. We were so excited to have an outdoor party, complete with Slip ‘n’ Slide, a kiddie pool, golf toss, and a barbecue. The day of the party, we began setting up at 10 AM and realized we were in for a scorcher of a day, since the temperature was already in the 90s and climbing.

How I decided what to read when preparing to conceive

When the hubs and I first got serious about going off the pill, I did what I always do when I am facing a new and exciting challenge: I started reading. As fast as I could download them onto my e-reader, I snatched them up: books on pre-conception health, on the challenge of balancing work and family life, and on maintaining a happy marriage after having a child. I couldn’t wait to begin thinking through what it would mean to have a baby in concrete terms.

Darth Vader and son: a new book about that special father-son relationship

Cartoonist Jeffrey Brown has released a new book called Darth Vader and Son that’s going to melt the hearts of Star Wars fans everywhere…

The Baby-sitters Club: where are they now?

From the moment I first read The Baby-Sitters Club #1: Kristy’s Great Idea what seems like a zillion years ago, I was hooked. I devoured the BSC books, reading all about Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey, Dawn, Mallory, and Jesse: back before I had “girls,” these ladies were my girls. So I pretty much happily squealed and shrieked when I found this article discussing the likely present-day whereabouts of the club members (you know, if they were real).

The perfect gift for the library nerd in your life?

Oh man. I know there are a ton of you who know (or ARE) the uber-book nerd librarian types who would deeply appreciate this Personal Library Book Sharing Kit from Plasticland.

I mean, it’s got a date stamp! It’s got self-adhesive pockets and checkout cards, and even its own little fussy pencil. For me personally, when I loan out books I just assume they’re being gifted, but if you or one of your book nerd friends love to keep track of your loaners… SQUEE!

Recognizing ourselves in the stories that we read

At bedtime, I read my daughter Alice a story. This has been our nightly ritual since before she was born, but now, after we read together, she reads on her own. She’s always loved stories, but more and more she’s caught up in words. Almost nightly now she pops out to read her dad and me a short passage: beautiful descriptions, scenes that seem especially funny or apt to her.

5 kid’s books that are probably out of print that you should try to find anyway

OUT-OF-PRINT BOOKS: why do they tease book lovers so? They’re always out there, calling out to you from awesome lists (ahem), just making you wish you could scoop them up and bring them home forever. To me the only thing worse than your everyday out-of-print book is a CHILDREN’s out-of-print book. I’ve experienced what can only be likened to anguish after discovering an incredible children’s book is no longer available.

Stuff you guys love: temporary tummy tattoos, kid’s bike seats, and so many BOOKS

It’s no secret around these parts that I run a post featuring products from one of our many affiliates once a week or so. These posts are always an awesome way to share product recommendations and stuff that helps you navigate these murky waters we call parenting — the books posts alone are proof of that.
