I’m allergic to garlic and onions: talk to me about your other favorite spices!
I read a critique recently that said cooks are too dependent on garlic and onion to spice dishes. I know I’ve been quite guilty of that. so when I identified that I’m allergic to onions and garlic, I’m trying to look at it as an opportunity to break out of a rut and try out some new flavors in my kitchen. So homies, tell me about some of your favorite spices and how you use them!
What can we buy, build, or make to commemorate our first home?
I’ve been looking for a way to commemorate buying our first home together — something I can buy, build, or make. That way we can keep it forever, and whenever we look at it we’ll know we’ve had that since we moved into our first home.
How do you get over your sewing anxiety?
I finally broke down last year and convinced my husband to get me a starter sewing machine for my birthday. I have made some things, pillows and an amazing Star Trek Fez for DragonCon this past August. But I find myself so intimidated by my sewing machine and the lingering ghost of my mother’s seamstress talents, that I can’t seem to get myself to try anything else. How do you get over sewing anxiety? And are there any good alternative/offbeat sewers and blogs out there that I can follow?
What are you favorite offbeat or non-aluminum-based deodorants?
I sweat a lot, but I try to avoid aluminum-based deodorants/antiperspirants. But I’m a teacher and I usually resort to Secret or something else standard on the days that I’m teaching (teacher pit stains are the worst!). Sometimes even that doesn’t cut it. I would love to hear about other Homies’ antiperspirant solutions — particularly of the offbeat or non-aluminum based variety.
How can an introverted couple cohabit with another couple?
My husband, our two closest friends (who are married to each other), and I all live in an apartment building that has recently been purchased by an Evil Property Management Company. We aren’t bound by a long-term lease, so we’re considering moving out — all four of us together. Has anyone else lived as a couple with another couple, or been an introvert living in intentional community? What made it work? What made it hard?
What’s it like living in a geodesic dome?
My husband and I are looking to move out of our apartment and purchase this 1977 Geodesic Dome. Are there any Dome Dwellers among the Homies that can offer us the possible pros and cons of moving into a geodesic dome?
How do I recycle greywater in the winter?
Due to some boring logistics, we will probably end up placing the washing machine in the garage. The problem is that there is no drain there, and it’s cost prohibitive to install one right now. Our solution is to recycle the greywater from the wash. In the summer we will use it to water the lawn. However, in the winter the temperature drops below freezing, and we don’t really need an ice skating rink in our back yard. What ideas do you have for recycling greywater in the winter?
How does living TV-free affect your family?
Currently, my spouse and I choose to live TV-free. As an adult, I have a sense for how that could affect me personally and socially, but I am also the one consenting to not having a TV. I can choose to download TV shows if I want to. I can look up references to things if I’m not familiar with them. But kids don’t necessarily have the choice. What I’m wondering about is how living TV-free affects your household and your social life. I’m especially curious about this for households with children, and whether (or how) you suspect it affects your kids’ social life (both positively and negatively).
