Families

Our sister site Offbeat Mama launched in 2009, became Offbeat Families in 2012, and was merged into Offbeat Home & Life in 2015. This archive contains all the posts ever published on those sites! We believe that while children change your life forever, being around kids doesn’t necessitate abandoning your identity. We believe in supporting and inspiring parents and caregivers who are moving beyond mainstream visions of parenting. We welcome anyone who’s interested in families, whether you’re pre-parental, in the process of becoming a parent, or choosing to live childfree.

single parent household books

What are your favorite children’s books that talk about being a single parent household?

My husband is leaving me and our almost-two-year-old daughter. I’ve made sure not to badmouth him in front of her and try to keep all conversations about it to a minimum when she’s around, but I know that eventually, she’ll figure out that many of her friends have two-parent households and ours does not.

How to make your own glittery soap

I was inspired by This Halloween-themed soap tutorial from Cap Creations, and I had a great time making these! Each soap has a fun little surprise in the center, which my kids go nuts over.

Are there socially inclusive alternatives to Boy Scouts?

The recent decision by the National Boy Scout Association to continue to exclude gay members and leaders has pretty much finalized my decision not to let my son join. This is going to cause some rift in my family, as my husband was an Eagle Scout and my father-in-law is the local troop leader. Does anybody know of alternative organizations that teach similar skills?

IVF failed three times and I’m ok: who else has accepted an unplanned Child-Free lifestyle?

I have had three failed IVF treatements and been on the super emotional roller coaster. After a bit of time I’m kind of OK/relieved (at least for now), and accepting the Childfree lifestyle that has been foisted upon us. I seem to be the only person on the interwebz who has this attitude.

This beachside yoga-infused maternity session’s gonna make you swoon

Amy and Tres share a love for yoga — in fact, they were introduced to one another by their yoga teacher. The two are now expecting their first tiny yogi, and decided to have some fun with yoga during their maternity session with Cassie Leigh Photography.

Seesaw 1

Build a seesaw and put it in your yard for less than $30

The very inspirational Mallory over at Classy Clutter recently rocked my world with this hand-built wooden seesaw — which they put together for less than $30. Mallory (a self-described novice wood worker) put together the entire thing in under two hours.

Take some time and journey to a dreamy sleeping baby land

Chantell and Freddy celebrated the recent birth of daughter Liliana in Chantell’s mother’s home. The trio enlisted the expertise of Laura Isle Photography for their session, which seems like an awesome fit — I’m not usually especially drawn to photos of babies in baskets, but these look like Lily was in the middle of the best sleep ever in the softest bed ever and just fucking loving it.

8 tips for straight-haired mamas with curly haired kids

I have rampantly curly hair. And my daughter’s hair is increasingly a frickin’ clone of my own, in terms of structure, colour, texture, frizziness and pigheaded stubbornness. I thought that, for the benefit of any mama out there bringing up a little Taylor Swift, a little Adrian Grenier, or, god forbid, perhaps even a little Kenny G, I’d share some wisdom based on 31 years of personal experience.
