Our homes are made up of lots of working parts — bedrooms, redecorated kitchens, upgraded baths, ogle-worthy renos, ticks and tricks for cleaning and organizing, and real home tours all live here to represent the spaces of your Offbeat Home.

I’m afraid to fall in love with my home

Now I am here. Books are in the bookcases, clothes are in the closet, the dog is being snuggly on the bed. This is already shaping up to be one of the best times of my life, but it’s also sad. I’m afraid of falling in love — more afraid than I have ever been of falling in love with a person.

Pop bottles and make some wine cork and bottle cap projects

My favourite souvenirs from travel seem to be booze-related. I have a bunch of corks that I’ve saved from vineyard tours; bottle caps from my favourite beer at a brewery tour; and paper pub coasters from Hofbräuhaus. They’re sentimental and touristy at the same time (not to mention cheap and easy to bring back home) — but right now they’re just packed away. I want a way to display them that’s tasteful or even useful, and I’m inspired by this quote from Suzanne and Tim over on Offbeat Bride

3 Houses

Offbeat Home Hunters: The Maine character edition (or “other Portland” edition!)

We set out to find a cozy, three bedroom house in Portland (preferred) or South Portland, with a small but usable yard space. We weren’t afraid of a cosmetic fixer-upper, but wanted a structurally sound house. We both love all things old and all things character — moldings, built-ins, original details, and an overall cozy feel. So here were our three top choices…

How to glam up my bike

Paint jobs, replacing parts, adding accessories… How do you pimp your bike ride?

This is my bike. It is a good bike that performs all of it’s bikely functions. It was a gift from my in-laws, they got it at a garage sale and I really do love it. I just wish it were more, errr, stylish. Does anyone have any ideas for how I could spruce it up?

Get inspired: a tiny house built by a teen

We have an entire tag devoted to tiny homes, but this is the first we’ve featured built by a middle-schooler. 14-year-old Sicily and the tiny house she built are both amazing and adorable. She named it La Petite Maison, and it’s 128 square-feet of efficiently organized space. It has a working kitchen and bathroom, a queen-sized loft bed, a bunch of storage — and it’s on wheels.

My parents’ pallet garden fence is ugly and awesome

My parents got a huge stack of pallets. They also got a huge influx of deer on their property this year. And the idea to grow a big ol’ vegetable garden. These three factors converged to create the Ugly Pallet Fence. Though it be ugly, it is quite effective…

How our haunted house is like a three-legged dog

I live with my soon-to-be husband and my nine-year-old daughter in the top part of a duplex in a pretty awesome city. As much as we love the neighborhood, the house, however, is an entirely different story. But despite all of its flaws, there is something adorable and promising about our house. I realized this one day when I compared her (the house) to our animals…

A kitchen sink organizer made of antlers

I wanted to get the sponges and other scrubbing devices out of the sink and out of the way, in such a way that they would only drip into the sink while drying. Most of the organizers I’d seen were supposed to sit in the sink, taking up valuable sink real estate (I have a small sink). So I built this solution instead!
