Do It Yourself

How-tos, photos and topics of DIY discussion.

Make an endtable out of cardboard — ENTIRELY out of cardboard!

Are you sick of cheap furniture which always looks the same? Are you longing for curvy furniture, furniture with as many drawers as you want, which adapt to the special shape of your home? Do you want customized furniture but can’t pony up the custom furniture price? You can do it: with cardboard furniture. I’m convinced this is the way of the furnishing future for Homies.

Make a new area rug with $10 and 10 minutes

We are apartment-dwellers, which means we have shitty carpet. Maybe some apartment managers put in nice, expensive flooring that looks awesome after ten years, but our landlords didn’t. After ten years of parties, dogs, and one wild child, the carpet in our place is spotty, threadbare, and wrinkled in places.

When we made over our eight year old’s room recently, one thing we really wanted was a big area rug. Unfortunately, rugs are expensive. Lucky for us (and you), making a rug is easy and cheap!

Make your own nautical lamp using hemp rope

Megan’s mama, Lala, invented the lala lamp — this pretty, simple, nautical lamp made with a few ingredients.

It’s got a wide berth for customization, so once you read this tute, you’ll be armed and ready for lamp love.

A picnic basket turns into a handy-dandy all-in-one craft station

I found a new-old picnic basket for $3.98 while out thrifting. A little work and now I have a craft center I can pack up and put away at a moment’s notice — and it looks cute both open and stored away!

Change the color of your cabinets without pissing off your landlord

I kind of hate wood. I’m one of those terrible, sinful people that will paint old wood furniture aqua, yellow, or antique white rather than treat it properly. I don’t whisper sweet nothings to my wood furniture and seductively offer to apply another coat of stain to it. I mostly just paint it and eventually forget that it ever had a lovely cherry finish.

This led to a small problem in my apartment. No matter what I tried… I HATED those damn cabinets. Until I found this solution.

I have a stockpile of prescription bottles — there HAS to be a use for them

Where I live, prescription medication pill bottles cannot be recycled or refilled by a pharmacist. You are supposed to just throw them out — is that true everywhere?

I am trying to reduce how much goes in the garbage, so I am looking for some ideas to reuse them. I have already found a few alternate uses – storing small craft supplies like beads, as well as keeping one in my purse filled with over the counter antacids – but I feel like some Homies might have some other ideas.

Drop-side cribs are now contraband, so here are 30 ways to reuse that baby bed

After many safety issues, the US has outlawed drop-side cribs. Now, this can be a boon for Homies — have you any idea how many projects you can make with a disused crib? No? Consignment Mommies thinks there are at least 30 projects waiting in all those cribs people are dumping.

Got leftover fabric scraps? Use them to fancify gifts!

If you’re looking for a cheap, simple, and green way to disguise a surprise, consider giving your discarded fabric some love by finding it a new purpose in life. Fabric scraps are a fantastic alternative to flimsy paper and shiny mylar.
