Crystals and stones provide a great way to add positive energy to your home. Each stone or crystal has its own special properties which can be utilized in a variety of ways — from deflecting negativity to encouraging good cheer.
Here are a few easy ways to use crystals and stones to improve your home’s energy…
To absorb and neutralize negativity
If there is anger or depression in your home and you’d like to dispel it, try placing several large hunks of jet around the house. This black stone will siphon the negative energies away from the home’s inhabitants. It can also be used to help ward off bad dreams.
To bring peace and harmony
To create an all-around peaceful, pleasant vibe that will help the people in your home feel good towards one another and get along well together, try tucking pieces of rose quartz and/or turquoise around your dwelling.
To increase cheerfulness
If you want to cultivate a more happy, cheerful, upbeat atmosphere, try placing citrine crystals or clear quartz crystals around your home to help lift the general vibe.
For healing and purifying
To help balance and restore your body’s energies while you sleep, place an arrangement of stones beneath your bed, choosing large specimens that don’t present a choking hazard. You might arrange the stones beneath the bed so that they correspond to your body’s chakras.
Place a hematite near the foot of your bed to correspond to the energy center located at your feet, and above that place a red or orange calcite to correspond with the chakra located at your pelvis. A yellow calcite comes next to correspond with the chakra located at the solar plexus, and a fluorite or green calcite is placed to correspond with the energy centered at the heart. Next, place a blue celestite to align with your throat chakra, and an amethyst to align with the third eye chakra located between your eyes. Finally, place a clear quartz to correspond with the crown chakra located at the very top of the head. This arrangement will help replenish and balance your body’s natural strength and vigor.
Cleaning your stones
Keep your crystals and stones clean. While typically your stones and crystals will retain their positive energy as long as they’re not exposed to bad energies, it’s a good idea to clean them every few months just in case, to clear them of any ickiness they may have picked up. You may want to cleanse them monthly on each full moon.
To purify and recharge your rocks, simply rub them with salt, rinse them with water, or place them beneath the sunlight or moonlight for a few hours. They’ll be energized and ready to refresh your home.
Some stones will discolor if exposed to the sun for too long. I learned this the hard way when my pink and green unakite jasper turned a dull brown when left on my nightstand.
Same goes for cleansing them in salt water. Also MANY stones are dyed. I shop raw crystals in some pretty great shops, and still find agate dyed to look like malachite or amethyst, amethyst dyed to look like citrine, and so on. It’s hard to tell sometimes, but too much consistency of color or pattern can be a tip that it may not be natural.
Research cleansing methods on the web before you do your stones. Some stones shouldn’t be in the sun for more than a short time – Amethyst (will go brown), Citrine will go grayish, Rose Quartz will lighten to white – both have to do with trapped electrons getting knocked around by photons rather than color fading. The color won’t come back unless they get a dose of radiation. That’s how they change amethyst into color enhanced citrine, smokey quartz to that super dark smokies, make oro verde quartz, etc. It’s a neat phenomenon.
Turquoise may bleach out to white if left for extended periods, kunzite can fade and lose it’s pink color if you wear it in the sun too long.
Selenite will dissolve in water. Etc., Etc., Etc..
Good lord, this makes my hippy heart happy! To help open that heart chakra, I have a big ol’ hunk of rose quartz under my bed!
Selenite!! I have selenite wands in every windowsill in my bedroom…it’s my way of keeping my space clear and light! They’re always getting charged with the sun and the moon, and I cleanse/charge my other stones by placing them on the selenite and letting them hang out for a while.
And at work we have huge selenite wands under all the massage tables to keep things clear. I love it!

And then there’s dreaming-stones. A dreaming-stone can be any kind that calls out to you.
To use a dreaming-stone, settle it lightly in your hand as you go to bed. The feel of it in your hand will remind you that you’re dreaming and help you become lucid, which can enable you to cooperate with the dream and kick things up to a new level.
I love this! I have a perfectly-shaped-for-my-hand piece of clear quartz at my desk, and have had great experiences with hematite jewelry dispelling negativity.
As a tree-hugging aside, if you’re concerned (like I am) about the environmental impact of gemstone mining, it’s easy to find many vintage stones.
It’s good to keep that in mind–thanks! I get great results with common, non-mined stones. Beach or creek cobbles especially have some experience to them. One of my most valued stones I found in a dry river bed, while on a quest for something else–it is naturally heart-shaped, smoothed by time, and a deep organ-red literally the color of a heart. I think it’s probably porphyry. I know that I have felt healing from it, and so have others.
I agree with all of these uses. Jet stopped my trauma nightmares like a light switch. I’d add that turquoise encourages harmony *because it cultivates communication (throat chakra). I have turquoise laying all over my house, because marriage. Also, citrine is known to promote prosperity/abundance. If you have a business, keep it where the money goes, or on your accounting books, in your cash register, etc. If you don’t, keep it in your purse or maybe your mailbox (I like to visualize checks in the mail just for kicks).
Other favorites are tiger’s eye for letting go of stubborn tendencies/transitions, smoky quartz for grounding, and carnelian for PMS.
