What geeky methods can I employ to tell my partner we’re having a baby?
My husband and I have recently started trying to create a little baby geek all of our own! It dawned on my this morning that when the time comes for me to pee on that little stick — it seems my life revolves around peeing on little sticks these days — that he will be at work, so I will know a good 10 hours before he gets back.
How can I ask non-intrusive family planning questions?
Before, I didn’t get it. I didn’t think it was a big deal to ask if or when a couple was having kids. I didn’t realize the impact that merely being asked questions along these lines can have on someone dealing with personal decisions. I’ve actually apologized to a couple people for my past ignorance. But now I have a new problem: since these questions are off limits, I have no idea what to say!
Tips for breastfeeding a hospitalized baby
My baby was seven weeks old when he was hospitalized for the first time, and he was either not nursing, or not nursing well for two-to-three weeks. There were many times when he wasn’t allowed oral nutrition at all, and I pumped. The third time he was hospitalized, however, was really difficult.
A lightning storm brings in a baby: my hospital birth story
We left the house with the wind whipping around us as we laughed and then drove to the hospital which was about 20 minutes away. At the hospital I walked in and the nurse on-call asked if I was in labor, explaining that I was very calm to have just had my water break. At the elevator we met our doula and she shared the same observations. I heard them but thought that I was being normal and completely myself.
A spring-themed maternity photo session in a greenhouse
Nicole and George were ready to shoot their maternity photos to celebrate the impending arrival of their first child, but were stuck: they live in Massachusetts, and at the time of the session it was still cold outside. Luckily their photographer Amie Fedora Photography knew of a warm spot: the greenhouses at Wellesley College. The photos are a sweet capture of the excitement of new life — complete with flowers to boot!
Use beanbag chairs as super-squishy baby gates
I know, I know, I usually don’t touch baby stuff… but since we talked about couchless living, and I found out a lot of y’all love bean bag chairs, I figured you might love to know of other uses for those squishy seats. Offbeat Mama featured a post about baby-proofing with beanbags and it’s one big ‘ol “great idea” post…
“Be honest, honorable, and kind”: Wil Wheaton explains to a newborn girl why being a nerd is awesome
During a talk at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo on April 27th, audience member Jennifer Black asked professional nerd Wil Wheaton to explain to her newborn daughter Violet why being a nerd is so awesome. Jennifer captured Wil’s inspiring answer on film for herself and others around the world to enjoy and pass on to their children.
Why being in an interfaith relationship rocks
Before my husband and I got married, both sides of our families expressed a little concern about how we were going to navigate the waters of an interfaith relationship. Everyone in his family is Catholic. Just about everyone in mine is Jewish. People kept insisting that it would be so difficult for us — and just think of when we had kids! I have to say, I have found being in an interfaith relationship awesome for so many reasons. Here are a few…
