This small-but-edgy loft demonstrates how to decorate a small space with a lot of character

We can all take a few decorating lesson from this small-but-edgy 610-square-foot loft in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo. Let’s all check it out and learn how to decorate a small space with a lot of character.

How do you get into cosplay?

I’m a sucker for costuming and drooling over amazing cosplay pictures online. In October my local bike shop is having a “tweed ride” involving riding in period costumes, and I want to use this to give a try at cosplay (Victorian Mary Watson in her badass riding habit, for those who wonder). I don’t have an inkling where to start. I can sew, but should I sew my whole costume? Alter some pieces of garment? Are there tacit rules for cosplaying? Is the devil really in the details?

Bathroom words: talking to kids about sex, slang, and shit

Pee, poo, bum, urine, stool, penis, piss, shit. It’s like the kid version of The Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television by George Carlin. There they are. The bathroom words. I’ve never used the language “bathroom words” or even “inappropriate” to describe language, but have heard my kids reference “bathroom words” over the years and hadn’t challenged it. It was time to challenge.

Take a peek inside my retro, rainbow, second-hand, mobile home

It used to take me a long time to tell people I lived in a trailer park just because of the stigma but… I love this trailer. I like to think my house looks like someone in the late 1960s was in the middle of updating. Add to that my collection of toys, knick-knacks, and second-hand furniture, and you get my version of paradise.

At first, I felt a bit ashamed of being a thirty-year-old barista, because I was told that wasn’t what one was “supposed” to do at that age. But… for the first time in years, I felt alive again.

The Doll House tour: You must see (and maybe move into?) this manic pixie dream home

The moment I saw this video pop up on Facebook feed, I thought “the Homies must needs see this!!!” This tour is of a home called “The Doll House” in Hollywood. And yes, it’s wholly appropriately named.

What Buddhism can teach you about cleaning up cat hair

It’s Sunday morning at 7 a.m., and I’m up with unexpected energy. I lay out my yoga mat and sun salute to plank position. And this is when it happens. A tumbleweed of cat hair the size of a small muffin bounces past my face. But here’s the thing: I vacuumed last night! I lunge back into a child’s pose of despair and debate interrupting my practice to vacuum.
