Treehouses and houses in trees ranging from faerie fantasy to smooth and futuristic

Sometimes Pinterest boards are so chock-full of crazy amazing design and weird home goodness that I know we all just need to take a few minutes to admire them and their curators. Interior designer Sarah Kelly has one such board: all about tree houses — both the kind built in the tree and the kind built of a tree.

For Sale By Owner: A secluded hand-built house with a spring-fed pool. Will trade.

My friend Rachel spends a lot of time fantasizing about houses. And stalking houses. She sent me this week’s Offbeat Real Estate dreamboat: an “artistic” house in Idaho, now up for sale or trade. It’s off the grid, a 1/2 mile from the road, and three floors on 12 acres — with the middle floor set up as a tile cutting/stained glass studio, it’s perfect for someone who needs to get away and work for a while.

Imagining yourself in this home takes some work — the owner has a love of using flash and therefore, taking really unappealing photos. It’s okay. I’ll help you fantasize.

Would you like a tiny German camping headquarters that can also hit the water?

I’ve never really gotten the fascination with amphibious cars. Even James Bond doesn’t need a boat he can drive onto land! But today, I get it. I had to change my mind after meeting this tiny amphibious camper — it’s like something from a dream!

Wait until you see what’s inside this missile silo. Hint: they have drum circle.

Ed and Diana Peden bought their very own missile silo outside Topeka, Kansas in the 1980s. At the time it was twenty years decommissioned and filled with water and sludge, but the couple couldn’t pass up the 18,000 square feet spread out on 13 floors underground.

A candy-coated Willy Wonka house in New Jersey — with a bonus wedding thrown in free

Today Offbeat Bride featured a wedding that y’all will love — Peter and Stephanie’s wedding at a house fit for Willy Wonka. I pulled a number of photos — eat it up, Homies.

Ultra-natural, high-design treehouses from around the world

We haven’t taken a day to hang out in the forest for a while, and since it’s just good medicine, let’s do that. I’d like to introduce you to Romero Studios, a treehouse-building husband and wife team which has traveled around the world, spreading treehouses, gardens, and sculptures using 98% reclaimed materials.

A seashell grotto in the front lawn, a Piet Mondrian front door, and a lavender house in the south

Come in and see Fresh-from-Florida’s shot of something called a “cracker house.” It’s a thing. Anyway, it looks like a house from True Blood to me.

A craftsman’s fairy tale cottages built with reclaimed materials

Don’t let kids have all the fun: these flights of fancy aren’t just for playhouses. They also make sweet guest houses and saunas.
