Rainbowify your ugly old table with gift wrap

Check out my rainbow table — a DIY! My parents had some ugly old brown laminate-top table in the basement and said I could have it for the apartment. My mom had a great idea to cover it with some gift wrap she had leftover. We made it up as we went along and basically went with the principle that Mod Podge can do almost anything.

Transform your staircase with vinyl tape

So yeah. This looks like some insanely awesome paint job, or some sort of custom acrylic installation. But these boldly colorful striped steps are actually just covered in vinyl tape by Scottish Artist Jim Lambie. Seriously. AMAZING. I’m not sure how well these steps would hold up to regular use but I’m always stoked when I see bold-but-temporary design options.

Paint the handles of wooden spoons

…More like AWESOME idea of the day. Turn your old wooden spoons into a color-coordinated rainbow-dipped set. Crystal from A Little Bit Funky posted a whole tutorial on her site — including what she used to seal up the spoons safely. You could use them as art OR as useful utensils!

Sweet rainbows: How to make your own colored sanding sugar

As a rainbow-loving lady, I’m always trying to add color to my confections. As a newly-diagnosed diabetic, I have to watch what I’m adding to sweet treats. This is a trick I’ve used to color sugar for topping cupcakes and candies many times, and it works for sugar substitutes, too!

Making your own sanding sugars lets you create just the right hue to add to your sweet rainbow and dragon, here, is going to show you how it’s done.

HomeMint: Justin Timberlake, home decor, and “encompassing masculinity”

If you’re an aging unabashed Justin Timberlake fan like myself, then you surely noted the launch last week of his new home decor collaboration, HomeMint. Despite not quite being their demographic, I totally still entered the contest to win a trip to LA to hang out with JT and Estee. We can talk color swatches and I can try to convince them rainbows are fucking awesome. I also followed HomeMint on Pinterest, where this doozy of a pin showed up, with the caption “Encompassing masculinity”…

It’s our weekly roundup of reader photos and interesting Offbeat Home-ish links from around the web. This week we’ve got the lowdown on air conditioned doghouses, an upcoming steampunk fest in Massachusetts, and era-appropriate Disney princess cosplay. Click on through!

A handmade rainbow-and-clover-themed birthday party for a one-year-old

What do you do when your kidlet is born on St. Patrick’s day? Throw a rainbow-and-clover themed party! Complete with a unicorn piñata that’s about to get its head whacked off.

One super sweet monster/ugly doll/rainbow-themed kid’s birthday party

Eryn and Laurie recently shared photos from their daughter Izzie’s birthday that I am SO IN LOVE WITH. They’ve nicknamed their kiddo “Izzie Monster” and felt like a monster party would be the only way to really celebrate. Between the ball pit (kiddo pool + balls = instant kid fun) and coloring wall I think they most definitely did that.
