I've seen all the usual DIY eco-friendly cleaning recipes floating around the great wide Interwebs, and tried out most of them. But I'm wondering… are they all really safe? For example, I'm kind of suspicious of the baking soda, vinegar, and castile soap chemical reaction that takes place. What are some reliable resources with DIY cleaning recipes that rely on real research about the actual safety and effectiveness of the recipes?

ome people hate taking out the trash, for others cleaning the toilet makes them fly into a rage. My own personal household Waterloo has always been emptying the dishwasher. It wasn't until my husband and I put all of our stuff in storage, moved across the country, and rented a temporary apartment that I had my Oh, baskets! moment: HAVE FEWER DISHES.
My guy and I work from home — well, I work from home, he works from the shop in the barn behind our house, and it's SUPER awesome. People drop by all the time, and it's not unusual to have folks over 3-7 nights a week (people stay over 1-3 nights a week).
I come from a pretty traditional background and a clean freak mom so having an open house like this REALLY stressed me out, because I wanted the house to be clean and have snacks out etc. I've relaxed my standards significantly and now I'm wondering what kind of life-hacks I should be using to be prepared for guests?
I recently managed to get a full time job after almost a year of working part-time, ad-hoc hours. I maybe worked two five hour shifts a week and had lots of time to myself. Therefore, for the past year, I was responsible for keeping the house nice, and enjoyed having nearly all day every day keeping the house clean and tidy. When I moved to full time work I realized that I would not be able to manage to keep the house as clean and tidy as I was able to when I was out of full time work. I found that these three things have helped keep the house habitable and the housework manageable.
I am an un-medicated adult with ADD. I have spent most of my time un-medicated, and thus rely on coping mechanisms. (Note: I TOTALLY support chemical assistance, I just haven't had any.) Even though I have an "ADD can be a bonus, not a minus!" philosophy… right now, I'm on the subject of dealing with it as a drawback. I have a super-short attention span and I suck at getting work done on anyone else's timetable. Or any timetable. OR… at all. So me and housework, planning, organizing, and housework have this love/forget relationship… But stuff has to get done somehow. Here's what I have figured out…
I maintain that having a great evening with friends doesn't require blood, sweat or tears. I think that anyone can host a party, anytime — even when the laundry's not done, even when there are dirty dishes in the sink, even when vacuuming is a faint, distant memory. Let's throw this party.
