Fiddling with RSS and Offbeat Home newsletter

This picture has nothing to do with RSS feeds
Just a quick note to let everyone know that this week I'm doing some tinkering with Offbeat Home's RSS feed and email newsletter (which is just an emailed version of our RSS feed).

As some of you have noticed, we've been having issues with the existing feed and newsletter delivery for a couple weeks, and it's high-time I switched over from Feedburner to Feedblitz. The shift is seamless so there's no need to resubscribe, but I AM looking for feedback about what you think of the new formats of both the feed and the newsletter. I'm testing the shift today on Offbeat Home, and once I get things worked out, I'll be making the shift on Offbeat Mama and Offbeat Bride, too.

So, if you use RSS or the email newsletter and have thoughts — leave a comment! And for the rest of you, here's a picture of my dog.

  1. "And for the rest of you, here's a picture of my dog."

Ariel…This is why I love you!

Also, I am not signed up for the newsletter "yet", but just clicked the checky box below, so we will see…

    • Oh yeah! Feedblitz makes it easy for folks to sign up for the newsletter when they leave a comment (and also VERY easy to unsubscribe if you start getting the newsletter and are like WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT?!).

  2. I enjoy that the new RSS posts have a link straight to comments. Makes reading them easier, and makes me more likely to interact (hence; first comment! Woo!).

    • i was gonna say the same thing. i subscribe with google reader and like to interact with comments. the direct link to comments is awesome. i like the share buttons too!

    • Yeah, those comment links at the end of each post are pretty freaking cool! I'm less sold on the related posts links, which seem to just be "recent posts," which feels not especially useful.

  3. For whatever reason, the clicky links don't always hypertext properly in my RSS. Only for Offbeat Home, not the others in the OBE. We'll see come Monday if the new system fixes the problem. Hooray TBA…

    • Are you seeing this THIS week? I just switched the RSS stuff yesterday morning, so if it was before this week it might no longer be an issue…

      • I've been having this problem today, also the same kind of problem if I try to open the original post from my reader. (I use Google)

  4. I'm getting multiple copies of the newsletter now. I wasn't getting any for a while, but ever since the first message about it being "fixed", I've gotten at least two copies of every newsletter, and once I believe I got four (though I delete them after reading so I'm not 100% sure). I definitely got two copies of the most recent one.

This is more of an FYI than a complaint, though. If I get it more than once, I just hit "Delete" again, so it's not a big deal. I just thought I'd bring it up in case others are having the same problem.

    • Hi Ariel,

It looks like it's just been in the last week or so. I have a gap between Feb. 23rd and Mar. 1st where I got no newsletters, then I started getting duplicates. I'll forward them to you as requested. Some of them are called "Offbeat Home: (blahblah)" and some are "New on Offbeat Home: (blahblah)".

      • Yep: you're getting newsletters from both Feedblitz AND Feedburner. Fixed now! πŸ™‚

  5. I stopped receiving feeds since yesterday (haven't had those of March 7&8). Before that, I missed some too, but then you guys switched.

There are ads now in the RSS. Just noticing. πŸ™‚

    • Hannah, to clarify: the feed is not updating for you? You may want to try resubscribing by clicking the RSS icon at the top of the sidebar…

    • Odd! What browser are you using? I just tested it out in Chrome, and it worked fine. Perhaps try in a different browser just to see?

      • I'm working on Firefox (10.0.2), but tried Safari, as well to no avail. I'm sure it's something weird on my end.

  6. Is anyone else having issues adding the new RSS to your RRS Feeds folder in Outlook? When I try to add the new feed, I get an error message which states: Outlook cannot process the RsS content from ( The link may not point to a valid RSS Source.
