I'm a woman with a "high" sex number and I'm okay with it

The very reason why I am hesitant in writing about the topic of my sex number is the very thing that I want to try and stop!

So, that is why I am going to share this with you because I want girls to be able to be comfortable in their own skin, regardless of their sexual choices…

Balance for working parents in emotionally demanding jobs

After a particularly difficult day at work, I snapped at my 3-year-old over something minor that totally didn't warrant such an overreaction. As I registered the hurt in her eyes, I realized what had happened — I had given so much of my patience to my students that day, there was none left for my own child when she needed it. After a good long cry and some consolation ice cream (for both of us), I knew I needed to start being more intentional about my work/life balance if I didn't want my psyche to implode like a dying star of stress and guilt.

These are a few of the strategies I've put in place to preserve my sanity and ensure that everyone in my life—myself included—gets the care they deserve.

Strange pantry cooking: Creative culinary concoctions from someone else's kitchen

Cooking in another person's kitchen awkward and daunting. However, once you get the hang of it, the opportunity for creativity abounds! Vacation rental kitchens are great for this. Random grains or spices left over from a previous tenant? Dried up feta? Strange condiment? All fodder for the most amazing meal (or at least an interesting creative experience).

Learning to cope with a parent in prison

My mom went to prison for drugs, the first time, when I was seven years old. When my mom was arrested again, five weeks before my wedding, everything came crashing down on me.

I feel like it's something that's so taboo to talk about, even though (according to the US Bureau of Justice) over 2.2 million people were incarcerated in 2013. That's a big, big number for something that isn't regularly being talked about…

Mama, why are you fat?: Teaching kids about different bodies

Growing up, I was teased all the time about my weight, and it affected me profoundly. I was almost 30 before I reached a place where I could just inhabit my body without seeing it as a problem. I decided that I didn't want to view my own skin as an enemy. And I certainly don't want my children growing up thinking that everyone should look like people in magazines, or that we should all just be miserable with our physical bodies because they aren't "perfect."

We all fight this fight, and we probably all want a better world for our children to have bodies in. How do we make that happen?

Can you get a tattoo over a stretched postpartum stomach?

I have always wanted a tattoo, and having come to this point in my life I feel like I can choose one to go on said stomach. However, I cannot find any pictures or information on getting a tattoo on stretched, loose skin — not, like, little stretch mark, c-section scar belly. It's like, hanging, stretched-flesh belly.

Is a tattoo over a stretched postpartum belly a thing you can do? And if it is, what kind of design would work?

What do you pack for lunch?

At the grand old age of 35 I'm still figuring out how to be an adult. One thing I wish someone had warned me of is that one of the hardest parts will be feeding yourself. A challenge I've had for years is… I just don't know what to pack for lunch at the office. Homies, what do you pack for lunch?

Kof-tot curry: My recipe for potato kofta curry using tater tots

Potato koftas are made with riced potatoes, onions and spices. Most of the recipes I read went through the painstaking instructions of how to make these potato balls… I read through them and realized, "They are just making tater tots!" I've been known to scoff at home made tater tots in all shapes and sizes so I decided that I'd make my own version of potato kofta for our lunches this week… Here's how to make my "kof-tot curry."

How young is too young to teach kids about sexual objectification?

Recently, some situations have come up which make me, as an intersectional feminist, question how to speak to my sister, let alone my nieces, about sexual objectification. How young is too young to teach kids about sexual objectification? Beyond that, has anyone got any ideas on how to break down sexual objectification for young people to understand?

5 ways to get control over that tornado of pet hair

I have two dogs — a small fawn pug named Doug, and a giant yellow lab named Luna. I also had a yellow lab when I was growing up. I seemed to have forgotten the unbelievable amount of hair that Lab coats can shed.

It can be really hard to keep on top of all the pet hair. For the most part, it's just part of life. If I don't clean daily there will suddenly be tumble weeds of hair floating around the house. Every spring Luna's big hairy winter coat decides it's time to shed and next thing you know I am coughing up dog hair. But there are things you can do to help get control over that tornado of pet hair…

Hangin' with my homebees: Our experience with "beekeeping lite"

We just received, what feels like, the most unusual wedding present in the history of matrimony. My new mother-in-law gave us a beehive — complete with ten thousand happily buzzing inhabitants.

So, if anyone is thinking of getting a beehive, here is what I have learned so far…

How do you explain that your fur baby is more than "just a pet"?

I chose not to have human children and instead to have the four legged furry kind. A lot of people have a hard time understanding for me she is not just a pet she is FAMILY. Most of the time I can choose to ignore the people who say "it's just a dog." But, after losing my fur baby, I cannot ignore them anymore. How do I accept their caring when they don't get it? How do I help them get it? Or should I even bother to try?

How to paint an animal skull

To answer the question of "how to paint an animal skull," I turned to former Offbeat Home editor and, in my mind, the goddess of dead animal bones, Cat Rocketship! Sure enough, she had an answer AND happened to be wearing a "crown of animal bones" as she wrote her advice…
