I don't plan to stay married to the person I'm married to today

In which I analyze personal evolution and its role in long-term, monogamous, marriage. With every lesson I have embraced, with every tear I have released, and with every damn experience I have accrued, I have changed my opinion, my story, and my inner-most self, and so has my husband.

What's the deal with gender-neutral parenting?

In recent years, however, we’ve seen a trend come about: parents are now choosing to raise their kids in “gender neutral” ways, eliminating any preconceptions about what a child should like or not like based on the sex they’re assigned at birth, in varying degrees.

I'm against the war, and I adopted a soldier

Whether we like the war or not, war is happening. We have brave men and women willing to fight in it for their own reasons. It makes me angry that so many of our young people are being sent to be hurt or killed for what I consider an unwinnable cause. But I don't think any of this means we should support our troops any less.

How we DIYed our IKEA kitchen remodel

While we hired contractors for the Serious Business projects like structural and electrical work, we decided to tackle updating the kitchen cabinets ourselves. We chose Ikea cabinets as they were generally agreed to be the best quality for the price and we wanted to keep this a budget kitchen wherever possible. Here's how we pulled it all off…

How I hacked my anxiety with my iPhone

So much of my time is taken up by worrying about the time, that I can barely do anything else. I work, anxiety-ridden, with one eye on the clock. I don't dare make other plans on days I already have plans, lest I lose track of time. And my heart is beating hard and fast for hours on end. Then my therapist gave me a suggestion in helping with my timing anxiety, and, after giving it a lot of time to see if it worked, I can honestly say IT HAS BEEN THE BEST THING EVER!

I (started to) defeat my body image issues with a sword

A few months after starting to run regularly, my fiance found a local sword fighting class. Even a year earlier I might have hesitated (“swords aren’t for people like me”) but thanks to my new-found confidence, I was ready to dive in. I’ve spent the last six months focusing on thinking of my body in new, positive ways. I focus on what I can do instead of my perceived flaws. I don’t wake up every morning feeling like the most beautiful woman on the planet, but I also don’t usually wake up in a cloud of self hate.

I'm an anarchist and so are you (probably)

Smashing the windows of Starbucks, a giant red encircled A, and the music of the Sex Pistols… these are the things, images, and sounds that may be evoked when people are discussing anarchy. I'm writing to set the record straight and share with you the ways in which anarchy can and should be incorporated into everyday life.

Bisexual in a straight marriage

Coming out as bisexual to my husband was as strange as coming out to myself. I ended up speaking in so many circles that it took another conversation about two months later for him to realize that I was actually trying to come out to him. He had questions. I had questions. The biggest question was if I still wanted to be with him, or if coming out was also me realizing that I wanted more dating experience with other women.

Put yourself out there: How to become a penpal

I got the idea to start looking for penpals after reviewing the offbeat hobbies post. Someone said they wrote to the Amish. That is likely rewarding as well, but since I wanted the immediate gratification that only the Internet can bring (and the Amish are not known for being too talkative online), I pulled up Google and asked "how can I make penpals worldwide?" Boom. That easy.

Owning dairy goats: How I became the "crazy goat lady"

I am an Agricultural Science teacher, and a homeowner, complete with eight whole acres to use for sustainable farming. While the garden was put in, and laying hens purchased (chickens are the homesteading gate way drug), I couldn't forget my fascination with the dairy goats I had met! So I began researching…

Raised dog bowls that will elevate your dog's food and your style

My large dog has always had an elevated bowl, since he was too tall to eat directly off the floor. But as my smaller dog ages, it became clear to me that it was getting harder for her to bend down and eat her food. So I went shopping for an elevated dog bowl. I found a butt-ton of awesome, great-looking dog bowls. Check these out…

10 things I’ve learned from having a chronically ill cat

When we first took our cat Princess in, her old owners said she had mild muscle spasms, but they were nothing to worry about. We discovered less than a week later that her muscle spasms were actually seizures. Over the past four years my wife and I have learned a lot from this journey with Princess. These are the top ten things we’ve learned…

How to sew a large puppy bed from an old duvet cover

When we were getting ready to adopt our two ex-racing greyhounds, I bought a flannel duvet cover at a charity shop, studied a couple of pillowcase patterns, and made these giant pillows. This is my step-by-step tutorial for making a large puppy bed in a pillow shape, out of an old duvet cover and duvet. Only beginner sewing skills and supplies are required!

How to make your own museum-worthy kinsugi bowl

Quick and dirty couch makeover for under $50

I’m in a bit of an awkward position because I can’t afford to buy a brand new (nice) couch right at the moment, but I do intend to replace this old couch within a year. Thus, I need to have a useable, comfortable couch until I can replace it, but don’t want to put any more money into it than I have to. So with the Interwebz as my guide, I did a few more hours of research about couches and successfully “made over” my sad old couch for under $50.
