Mother’s Day is coming up. Now, I really love my future mother-in-law. She and I get along well and I have a few gift ideas in mind. But… do I get her something? And if so, what?

Is there etiquette to this cuz there is no Hallmark Card for it.

I love this question because it not only applies to future mother-in-laws, but any woman in your life who’s become a mother figure to you or your own kids. So what to get that “love you like my mother even though you aren’t actually my mother” person on Mother’s Day? Here are some of our thoughts…

Anything with a chalkboard becomes an adorable way to say “I love you.” This teapot would work, or for coffee-loving mothers there’s this guy.
Find a cute photo fixture like this one and make her a gift of photos from your engagement session, or photos of her family (with you included of course).

Okay, those are our suggestions. What are you getting your not-exactly-mom person in your life for Mother’s Day?

Comments on Mother’s Day gifts that say “I love you like a mother”

  1. Great round-up of potential gifts, I like the heart shaped wooden spoon!

I have acknowledged my mother-in-law for Mothers Day since my husband and I were engaged. I just get her a card and sometimes a gift and we both write in it. She does a lot of kind and loving things for us, in the last year she has helped with our wedding, gone to our house to meet trademen when we’re at work, bought us gifts, made us dinners and has always been there to talk to. “Mother-in-law” often gets a bad rap, so I like to remind her that she’s a great mother-in-law and that she’s an important part of our lives.

  2. This will be my first mother’s day without my mom. She passed away a few months ago after a difficult battle with cancer. I plan on sending gifts to my new future mother-in-law as well as my aunts, so thank you! This post is exactly what I needed! <3

  3. I actually saw a card at the grocery store today that was for exactly this. I didn’t read it to see whether it was as trite as all the other cards in the “Mother’s Day” section, though…

  4. I don’t have a mother-in-law of my own yet, but my parents have good relationships with both sets of in-laws and usually get joint gifts that are from our whole family to both of my grandmothers for Mother’s Day (and to the grandfathers on Father’s Day)

  5. We all just got back from a destination wedding (my husband’s brother’s) the day before Mother’s Day. The newlyweds are on their honeymoon, so his brother couldn’t be there for Mother’s Day. He is an excellent cook, and usually makes something spectacular for her, like stuffed french toast made with homemade bread. At the wedding he joked that since he couldn’t be there, my husband would make a lovely brunch consisting of Poptarts and Kraft Dinner (obviously he is not the greatest chef in the family). I love my mother-in-law and so decided to be a surrogate for my missing brother-in-law. I made her vanilla crepes with nutella and bananas. She loved it! It was a really great day for both of us.

  6. Hey Admins!

Wasn’t sure where to contact you for this, so feel free to delete this comment once you’re read it.

    1) Currently, the rotating banner on the main page only leads here if you click on the text title. If you click on the image, it still leads to the Star Wars pegboard post.

    2) Could it be that we got some spamming in the comments here? (Sorry if it’s not the case) “alisa” and “Saira”‘s comments don’t seem related to the main subject.

    • 1. I just clicked on the photo in the banner and it took me to this post. My guess is that you may clicked on the pic right as the featured post was switching to the next one (they rotate on a timer), and it took you to the next post instead.

      2. UGH, thank you for the flag. That particular spammer drives me NUTS!!!

      • 1. Hmm, weird, because I had actually tested it twice to make sure that wasn’t what had happened. But no matter, since it’s working now.

        2. No problem. First time I saw any comment spam on the Empire, so you guys must be real anti-spam ninjas!
