Use stumpy slivers of soap to make MORE soap

Guest post by Dale Mackey

clean handsI recently ran out of hand soap and decided that rather than buy more, I’d just rinse out the soap bottle and pump and make my own. It’s super easy to make your own soap using the stumpy remnants of bar soap (you know, the little sliver that’s a little too big to throw away but too small to really use) or little hotel bars.

Take your soap slivers and grate using a cheese grater until you’ve got about 1/3 of a cup. Add to 1 cup of just boiling water and turn off heat. Stir until soap is totally melted and add glycerine and essential oils (you can of course modify these to smell however you’d like). Use a funnel to transfer warm liquid soap to soap bottle. As it cools, it will thicken.

Place the bottle on your sink and delight in your tingly-smelling fingers and home-making ingenuity. DELIGHT!

  1. While I appreciate the frugality of this I would caution that comercial handsoap formulations are preserved while Bar soap has no preservatives (it also has no water so things won’t really grow on it). If you choose to do this make sure that the new soap is going into a clean container to prevent your bathroom handsoap from becoming a science project.

  2. That reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons where the family is trying to save money and Lisa’s contribution is squishing all the soap slivers into a new bar.

  3. When I was growing up, my mother always just shoved the ends of soap into a cut off bit of pantyhose, which was tied to the tap in the laundry – where it was perfect for washing your hands when you came in from the garden. Easy, frugal, and very practical. ^__^

  4. I have old soap bits, I have glycerin. I have lavender… tho not essential oil, just actual flowers. I could totally DO THIS THING.

Unlike most projects, which require me to buy more things. 🙂
