I picked up and moved my house across town (and then I moved out)

You may remember Ashley from her super useful try not to neglect your car post this fall. Homegirl’s also got herself quite the unusual living situation.

The offbeat occupant: Ashley, automotive service writer

Other occupants: nobody 🙁

When did you move into this home? three years of renovation/one year of living followed by two months of more working

Let’s start with the neighborhood. What’s it like where you live? I live just outside of my small town. Any MORE outside, and I would be lost in the woods. I don’t know any of my neighbors (and now that I am moving out, I really regret that).

I bought this house when I was 20 years old. I bought the home SEPARATE from the lot and I had it MOVED ACROSS TOWN. That was an experience in itself!

I worked and worked to gut and remodel it. I didn’t know what I was doing and many things were done incorrectly. When I moved in, after two years of working, I didn’t have trim or interior doors. My furniture was a cobbled mess of thrift store finds that I planned on SOMEDAY refinishing. And I was happy in my pile of a home!

Fast foward a year. I meet the most wonderful man. We bonded over construction of our homes. Mine was a renovation but his was new from the ground up and he actually knew how to do this shit. We got closer and when his house was finished, he had the idea that I should move into his home while we go back and REDO my entire redo. He saved my home from my destructive construction behaviors and it is now a beautiful place!

Sadly (but not so sadly) my home is EMPTY! I love living with my boyfriend and I have no desire to move back into my own home.

The best part of my home is my kitchen and bathroom. I will really miss my mash of color in the kitchen and my glass tiles in my bathroom.

What advice do you have for other offbeat homies? When making big purchases at 20 years old, many people will not take you seriously. Don’t let it get you down. Tell them that you were very serious about needing that estate on time or how you were not joking when you said you needed it done yesterday.

What’s your grandest plan for the space? The future will tell…

Comments on I picked up and moved my house across town (and then I moved out)

  1. I wonder if you could move it again (without having to really redo anything again). Then you could move it to a vacationing spot, and have a cottage!

  2. Wow, I have mad respect for people who can jump into construction/renovation. Also I’m weirdly thrilled that there is at least one other person out there who chose that particular color for her kitchen walls. 😀

  3. Beautiful interior! I love the yellow kitchen. =)

Maybe try adding some personal touches to it? It looks mostly big and empty because there isn’t too much decor in the house. Like maybe try to find some paintings at a thrift store or add a cute fuzzy rug?

My guy is a gearhead too, and some of his ideas to incorporate car parts into decor have been pretty nifty. Like he took a roush wheel, flipped it on it’s side, placed a round piece of glass on top and voila, instant side table of awesome-ness. I think there’s a show on speed channel that did the same thing with an old engine.

  4. Thanks for featuring my home!! I wish I was able to post on the day that it was featured but I was in the hospital (don’t fall down.. it hurts!)

Some day, I will have some more photos of our new home. It is nothing like this one but it’s beautiful as well!
