Send your friends on their way with a road trip care package

My best friend since I was a child/my downstairs neighbor just packed up and moved away. She’s driving with her husband and two dogs in tow from Los Angeles to their new home state of South Carolina. I didn’t know what to get her for a “going away present” so I put together a little road trip care package. Here’s what I included…

How to move your pets across large distances stress-free

Planning long-distance travel with your kitty in tow? Offbeat Home Ashley is doing exactly that and has been doing lots of research on the topic. Here’s here helpful tips about travling, stress-free, across long distances with your pets.

Conquering the belongings that formerly overwhelmed me

Are you moving or thinking it’s time to reduce some of the crap you own? Homie Matilda’s struggle with getting rid of all of her belongings for her impending move might help inspire you to reduce the amount of crap you own. Or it might also make you realize WHY it is you keep holding on to so many THINGS.

How DO you move out of state?

People pack up and move out of state all the time, right? It’s obviously a thing — a thing that my boyfriend and I can’t figure out how to do! In order to get an apartment, you have to have a job to prove your income; in order to get a job you have to live within a reasonable distance of the workplace. If it’s such a chicken and egg problem, how the heck do people do this?

How can I help my cat settle in after our move?

My fiance and I have moved to a new apartment with our two cats. While one of our cats seems to have taken to it nicely, quickly finding his “spots” and settling in, the younger of the two, Tony, does not seem to be doing as well. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions to helping pets relax after a move, specifically when there are large changes to the amount of people around? Has anyone else found something similar after moving their pets? Thanks in advance for your help!

We sold everything and moved to Indonesia!

One day I was at work and I got a text message from my partner that said something like, “Let’s move to Indonesia and get jobs as teachers!” And I was like, “Riiight, okay, right after we hit the lottery. Nice dreaming, though.” Four months later, we were living and working in Jakarta!

Moving advice: save the mental grit for BIG decisions and allow yourself to let the small stuff go

We moved two weeks ago. I usually like moving, but this move was particularly hard. We loved our place, but our landlord was selling it and couldn’t guarantee that the new owners would let us continue to rent.

Some people think we have a finite amount of willpower each day. Some days we make big decisions, some days we make little decisions, some days we make a lot of decisions, some days we make only a few. If we use up our finite amount of willpower early in the day, we might not have enough later to make the “better” decision or exercise our will-power. So we moved, and I found myself feeling taxed.

Oh shit, we bought a house! What now?

Oh shit, we bought a house! What now?

I called my husband and told him, “Oh shit, we bought a house.” He said, “Okay, we need to sit down tonight and make a list…” A list of what? He owned a house well before I met him so he’s gone through this before; but we’ve been together seven years now, which means that house was long long ago and what to prepare for was a distant memory.

What I need is a checklist — and I don’t mean things like get an inspection and such because that’s been done. We’ve got a house that we need to prepare to move in to, so what do we need to do? I mean, I get the change of address to the USPS and the utilities, pack, get a rental truck for the small stuff and price movers for the furniture but what else is there?
