Celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday with an easy lunchtime party

Hello, Muggle friends! Today is Harry Potter’s birthday, and in honor of my long-time obsession my kid and I decided to throw a birthday party. Since we decided this relatively last minute, it needed to be quick and easy. We decided our party would be best suited for lunch, because a) we like lunch a lot and b) lunch is easier than dinner. Here’s how our party went

A half-birthday celebration for siblings just for fun

I have two January birthday girls, so I thought it would be fun to do a combined half birthday party for them in July. We made it “half” themed, and it was simple but sweet and fun. Penny turned two-and-a-half, and Olive turned just a half. Here’s a recap

A woodland themed birthday party for a one-year-old

If you’re head over heels for foxes and polka dots, get excited! I’m totally smitten with these cute photos Alisa recently shared with us — she threw her one-year-old a woodland-themed birthday party. Here a few photos form the day!

A Go, Dog! Go!-themed birthday party

After celebrating our daughter’s first birthday a A Very Hungry Caterpillar-themed party, we kept it pretty simple this year — just a few tots and their parents, some light fare, and a couple of simple activities. Plus, I was nine months pregnant and just didn’t have the energy to go too crazy. I liked using a book theme last year, so we went with another book. This year, it was Go, Dog. Go!, one of Penny’s favorites.

A secular baby welcoming ceremony jampacked with love and sweets

We left the day feeling very much like we did after leaving our wedding. We tend not to do things in the “traditional” ways, and often get a lot of funny looks from people when we describe what we have in mind. With Margot’s ceremony, and our wedding before it, we got some push back from people who thought what we had planned was weird, or just… had lots of questions like “um, what the heck is a welcome ceremony?” So, we feel especially pleased when those same people come up to us to say “That was so lovely!” or “This was the nicest wedding/baby ceremony I have ever been to!”

My hand-and-homemade Legend of Zelda-themed baby shower

I’m a huge Legend of Zelda fan — my daughter is even named after one of my favorite characters in the series. So it was a no-brainer for me when coming up for a theme for my baby shower — of course it’d be Zelda!

How do I ask the person hosting my baby shower to make the party gender-neutral?

My fiance and I aren’t having a baby yet, but we’re trying to conceive and have already decided that we don’t want to find out the sex of the child until delivery. I have a lot of family and friends who will likely want host a baby shower for me, but I’m not sure how to convey the idea of gender-neutrality to them.

A Very Hungry first birthday party!

We hosted our son’s first birthday party in August 2012. We were so excited to have an outdoor party, complete with Slip ‘n’ Slide, a kiddie pool, golf toss, and a barbecue. The day of the party, we began setting up at 10 AM and realized we were in for a scorcher of a day, since the temperature was already in the 90s and climbing.
