This is a trailer for a new book, released yesterday, called Europe on 5 Wrong Turns a Day. In it, author Doug Mack takes travel advice from classic travel book Europe in $5 a Day. You can imagine how well travel advice from the 1960s has held up. This Los Angeles AirBNB listing centers on the $150,000 pool/spa set up your room overlooks. If you rent here, it's like booking a stay on The Real World — but you got the best room in the house without fighting your castmates! Satellite TV, a billion flat screens, a personal arcade…and wait until you see the pool after dark! This week Ariel and I fawned over a little trojan horse-style B&B somewhere in Belgium. It looks like it's the mobile home of a band of mysterious, roguish, magical minstrels. I look at its starry night bedroom and twisted-wood lounges and sigh. Husband and I have been happily hosting AirBNB guests for six months now, and it's an amazing place to find unusual housing types you might want to try out! When you're pregnant AND have a tour booked, about all you can do is get that baby on board and travel the country! Offbeat Mama has the story of The Golden Hearts and how they live with their baby on the road. My boyfriend and I have been traveling together for about five years now. We've done hotels, hostels, and even AirBnB — but our favourite way to spend time in a city where we don't know anyone is also the cheapest way: CouchSurfing.org. It's a free network for travellers and hosts for free accommodation, meet-ups, or advice, and it's been around since 2004. Imagine not only sleeping in Bologna for free, but staying with people your own age, with similar interests, who show you around town to the best spots you might otherwise miss. This is CouchSurfing.org. Other than my spectacles, wallet, and watch-type stuff, what can't I miss when I move overseas? I'm loving this time of year. Here I was, thinking the city went crazy for El Dieciséis, but Day of the Dead is so much more colorful, and soulful. Brightly colored sheets of papel picado hang in store windows. Velvety, crimson terciopelo flowers sit in vases at restaurants. Orange marigolds, the traditional Day of the Dead flower (called cempasúchil in Spanish) have suddenly bloomed in the street medians. |
