Decorating your home with litter boxes

51fFnd08TeL-2Believe it or not, but those two storage tables underneath Marilyn are kitty litter boxes. Kinda swanky for a dual poop station, ammaright?

I put my litter box outside on the balcony, and before that it fit perfectly in my bathroom between my sink and the toilet. But what if you don’t have a good tucked-away spot? What if you need more than one box?

I scoured Amazon, our archives, and even our Flickr pool to find the most decorative solutions for kitty litty boxes. So that when you have company come over, they (and you!) don’t have to stare at cat poop.

Hell, with some of these products, your guests may not even know they’re looking or even sitting on a cat box.

  1. I might be wrong, but I believe the ‘devil horns’ on the last box are probably meant to be cat ears. XD Totally adorable either way. I’ve never thought of trying to hide the litter box before, but when I next live in a more pet friendly environment, I think I know what I’m going to do with my litter box.

  2. I totally have one of the white ones in the top photo. It’s been a lifesaver! My old kitty was a bit of a “high pee-er” so I took a Rubbermaid tub and trimmed the top down and cut a hole to match the one in the door, and now the walls of the cabinet are protected from any stray…eh…debris…

    • Great idea! I’ve tried a box cover like these before but my male kitteh had it ruined in a week or two because of missing the box due to also being a “high pee-er”. I had not thought to custom fit a tub to it for the back side! Thanks!!!

  3. Love the bench! awesome idea!!!!

Right now, we have a bench that our cat sleeps on – do you think it would be gross (for him and his sensitive cat nose) to put the litter under where he sleeps??

    • My cat sleeps on her litter bench all the time. She loves it. It’s in a perfect location for her to survey all the human activity, and it’s big enough for her to stretch out her very long catperson.

  4. Can anyone recommend a mat that will significantly reduce litter tracked outside of the box by Kitty? I’ve tried:
    – rubber car mat style
    – terry cloth
    – carpet square

I’m vacuuming a lot of litter out of the carpet outside the bathroom every couple of days.

    Thanks!

  5. We have really really small bathrooms, one box per bathroom. it was SO annoying always stepping on litter and I kept looking for solutions including self scooping boxes, lids, etc. Eventually we tried this the Breeze litterbox system. So far its AMAZING! You have to scoop the poop every day, but there is no litter to step on anymore and the little pellet things hardly ever track anywhere. This has eliminated the lovely poo/pee stench in our bathrooms too. I highly recommend it! Only thing is you really have to ween the cats into the pellet system vs the litter system. Our cats didn’t use it at first but we slowly mixed it in and they don’t have a problem now.

  6. I like how many of these double as a box that can keep the dog out. That’s our biggest concern – we have a German Shepherd who is pretty fascinated with kitty produced snacks, and when she gets to the litter box, nobody wins. Nobody.

Right now, we have an elaborate setup in the living room with a covered box behind a cat tree, next to the couch. The cats can slip through to get into the box, but there isn’t any way for the big old dog to do it. They still prefer the box in our bathroom, though, which is maddening – but at least they will use it.

Now if I can just figure out where to put their food so the dog can’t get to THAT. 😛

  7. It’s is fantastic! I used to have my big covered cat box on my sun porch, but when I converted the porch into a study space, the cat box had to move. I searched high and low for ages to find a suitable box hider. My main problem was the size of my existing cat box – 18″ x 19″x 21″ (or similar). I couldn’t get a smaller box because my cat is a pretty big ‘n’ long lady.

After much searching, I found a bamboo chest with a removable lid at Marshall’s. The chest has a cloth covered removable cushion on the lid, too, which is a nice bonus. I carefully removed 6 of the bamboo slats from one end for a kitty door. The box fits perfectly, but without the box cover. Litter tracking isn’t a problem because the bottom of the chest is made with slats, too. When my cat kicks the litter around, it falls through the slats onto a rug under the chest. It’s cut down on litter in the rest of the house really well. As an extra bonus, the chest is big enough for a 35 pound bin of litter as well as the box. All of kitty’s box business is contained in the same area. Makes box maintenance almost easy!

  8. In my last apartment we had a coat closet with louvered doors.
It had a 2/3 split with 1/3 being shelving and the larger 2/3 being hanging space.
We removed a bunch of slats from the bottom of the smaller part of the closet and it made the perfect shitty litter box hiding space, no-one ever saw it and as it was right by the front door, smells just seemed to disperse out with fresh air coming in every time the door was opened.

Now we’ve solved the shitty litter problem by moving them down to the basement!

  9. I have to say, as a guest in homes of people with cats, I appreciate a hidden litter box.
I went to a party once, and the hostess’ uncovered litter box was right in the main party space. Halfway through the party her cat did its business. This was really offputting to me.

I do not have money for a fancy litter box cover, so I always just move my cat’s boxes out of the party space (including bathrooms) when people come over. It just seems like the polite thing to do, so guests aren’t dealing with cat smells.

  10. Thank you for posting this! We are moving in 3 days (wish us luck!) and our new place is smaller. I have been racking my brain for a place to put or second litter box until we can build our “Catio” outside. That ottoman one is looking mighty fine!

  11. I love Offbeat Home for this kind of stuff!
The only place we really wanted to put our uncovered litter tray was our tiny bathroom, but neither of us found the idea very appealing, nor did we want to spent shit loads on covered trays/houses.
And then this was posted, inspiring my inner DIY goddess 😛

I’ve just finished making this cover out of a bamboo laundry hamper (http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/5453/u4tj.jpg and http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/p451.jpg/).
I’m pretty proud, considering I did it with just nail clippers, scissors and tape (yes, we’re shamefully lacking in the tool department).
And on the plus side, it can go anywhere in the house rather than just the bathroom!

    Thanks my lovely Offbeaties 😀

  12. We built a fairly awesome “chest” for our kitties; two compartments, front entry ways, strong lid to keep prying hands out…and all three cats immediately made it their singular goal to pee next to, not in, the litter boxes. This nearly ruined the wood over the course of a few days, even with daily scrubbing, so we gave up. Does anyone have any good ideas for litter box management IN a clever decorative cover/container? We’d love to keep using it, especially with a now-walking toddler who finds litter boxes fascinating!

  13. I’m a bit slow in seeing this, but I must say, my litter box furniture piece is the BEST purchase I have ever made. I don’t see it in the pictures, but I got it on Amazon (“Merry Products Cat Washroom Bench“). It was pricey, but it’s a solid piece of furniture and it’s the biggest one I could find for the value. I could fit two litter boxes in there if I want. I could use the divider to put storage on one side and litter on the other. But what I do is put the litter box on the far side, away from the “door”, so that litter is less likely to be tracked outside. My home has been so much cleaner!

I also bought one of those baking soda containers that you can stick to anything using a suction cup. I keep it attached to the lid of the litter box (yep, the lid still fits on it when it’s inside of the furniture!) and we can hardly smell it.

I lined the bottom with a few of those litter-catching mats, which I shake out into the trash can once every other week, and then I just vacuum the inside of the furniture now and then.
