Monday Moment: Happy chalkboard-y fridge with skulls on top

Posted by

I thought we’d start our week off with a little horror decor moment submitted by Offbeat Homie Janelle. Apparently the skulls all collected above the fridge when they moved into their space, and, as Janelle put it, they just make her happy.

But you know what makes ME happy? The fact that her fridge is also a chalk board with a dual purpose. Janelle explains…

Lucky me, I came home one day to discover that my partner had purchased
erasable chalkboard markers and decorated our fridge! It makes me smile every day and brightens up my otherwise very grumpy/groggy mornings.

The lists on the bottom half of the fridge help us keep track of the perishables we have on hand. Writing everything on the fridge helps us remember what’s in there and cuts down on spoilage.

This was kind of like a Monday Moment AND a “great idea” all in one!

  1. That’s a great idea! Do you ever put shopping lists on there too? It would be useful for keeping track of things you are out of as people notice them and before they forget. I find that often we notice we are out of something but by the time we get around to writing a list we don’t remember all the things we’d noticed we needed. Having a way to make a list closer to the food would be a great idea for us. (Of course we could just put a piece of paper on the fridge with a magnet, but this seems more fun.)

I imagine that the fridge has to have a smooth finish for those markers to work well on it? I’d love to try this myself, but my fridge has a textured surface that would probably lead to wiggly writing at best and a cleaning nightmare at at worst! I’ll keep this idea in mind when we actually get to buy our own refrigerator someday.

    • We have a super smooth fridge, so they do clean off really easily. I would imagine that a textured fridge might be more difficult.

Oddly enough, we just have a notepad with a magnet that we keep on the fridge… I’d be too lazy to transfer the fridge notes to a piece of paper that I could take with me.

  2. I love this idea! It reminds me of when I found chalkboard spray paint in walmart and attempted to convince my partner that we should do the cupboard doors in it. He wouldn’t let me since they’re rented though.

    • The website for the Chalk Ink markers says that you can use them on surfaces painted with semi-gloss. WARNING: this does not work!

We just painted one of our cabinets black to try it out and the markers left a permanent stain. And, yeah, we rent too… we just plan on living here for a long time because it’s rent controlled.

So I guess we’ll stick to just using them on the fridge and mirrors. Which is cool, but we definitely had visions of cabinets with black panels covered in notes and lists. 🙁
