Homie, AmalaaFish was gifted a cake stand, and what she did with it has me re-considering how I deal with gifted items that initially aren’t my style.

Before

“I was given a free cake stand that just reminded me too much of my mom’s photos from the ’70s, so a little can of spray paint later and…

After…this is what I get! Now, it wasn’t the blue I wanted but it will do for now. No primer or anything, just clean and spray! (Okay so I did tape tissue paper around the neck to prevent weird markings from the slotted top).”

From poop brown ’70s fugly, to retro ’50s cake stand deliciousness with just a can of spray paint!? Has this totally changed the way you look at thrift store shopping or gifted items, too?

Comments on Don’t judge a cake stand by its color

  1. For my wedding I took these huge porcelain candle holders that were colored a sickly green and sprayed those bad boys a classic black, glued some clear plates on top and used them as classy cake plates. Spray paint can really do wonders.

    • I don’t know what kind of room you’re working with, but I got this AMAZING purple glass cake stand for Christmas one year and I’ve gone completely out of my way to make sure that puppy has a home.
When it’s not holding a cake, I’ve employed it on top of a bookshelf to hold a jewelry box. Since it lifts the box up, I can actually put more stuff on there around the stand, so that’s actually space-saving.
I’ve also used it as a catchall (for keys, wallet, phone) by the door, as a stand for a houseplant and as a part of a table centerpiece.

      • I use my awesome candle holder as a (small) plant stand on my mantle, so that my pictures can cluster around the base of it. Then when we need it for pretty occassions, down it comes to hold the hurricane lamp and mood lighting.

      • Well of course in my inside-the-box brain, I was thinking of “where would I store a cake stand?” I didn’t think of getting one so awesome that it would be a showpiece in our home!
Where would I be without all of OBH’s baskets?!?!?!

  2. when not holding cupcakes and other baked good for all the different things I bake for many functions, this sits on my kitchen table holding dinner food. Makes great use of space if you have a small table and cook like thanksgiving all the days of the year. lol eventually it will become more teal than blue… or whatever my fancy strikes when I get back to it.
