A birch tree nursery–with a twist

We live in a mid-century modern house that backs to trees, so we wanted the room to be modern and reflect the natural landscape outside. We also needed it to be gender-neutral, as we declined to learn the sex of the baby, and would like to use the room as-is for any future babies. We painted trees on one wall to bring the natural landscape in. I am a huge fan of Charley Harper, though couldn’t afford to buy original prints of his for the room–so we framed pages from one of his children’s books in Ikea frames.

Rather than purchase new furniture for the room, we bought a mid-century dresser and side table that can be used anywhere in the house once a nursery is no longer needed. We had an Ikea Poang lounge chair and ottoman so just purchased new cushions for it, and the only new furniture in the room is the crib ($99) and the wall-mounted shelves, also from Ikea.

  1. I love how you framed pages out of a children’s book – what a great idea! I noticed that you have an Ugly doll in the room – we started a little family of Ugly dolls for my daughter. 🙂

  2. How beautiful! I have a dream of a woodsy, East-coast forest themed bedroom for the day when I finally get to decorate a kid room. This is really inspiring!

  3. I see you used a few pieces from Ikea. I love Ikea and have been a loyal customer for years, however, as a first time mom….I’ve been researching everything! How are their cribs?

  4. I absolutely love this and am linking to it in my Top 5 Super Cool Baby Rooms post this week! What a wonderful concept and flawless execution. Contemporary, calming, natural. Awesome!

  5. You’ve created such a beautiful space. I hope you don’t mind that we’ll be drawing inspiration for it for our first nursery! Would you mind sharing what paint colors you used for both the walls and the trees? The combination is so warm. I love it!
