When the ladies of oVertone hooked up with the ladies of the Empire…

Remember when I introduced you to our sponsor oVertone? It’s the vegan and cruelty-free color-depositing conditioner that comes in six different colors. The ladies of the Empire were so stoked on this product that we forced oVertone to send us conditioners in all our various colors. As I tell you about this, my supply is running low and I’m about to order up another bottle with the special discount they’re offering our readers.

Let’s talk more about what happened when the ladies behind oVertone hooked up the ladies of the Empire with their awesome color-depositing conditioners…

I get my hair professionally colored, so my biggest concern was whether oVertone was gonna mess with the chemistry of my hair. I learned the hard way not to “touch up” my color with semi-permanent dyes, but my stylist thought the Vibrant Orange conditioner should be okay.

oVertone made the biggest difference on the top of my hair, where the sun tends to bleach out my color fast. It kept me looking good until my next hair appointment, which went smoothly (though I did stop using it four days beforehand just to make sure it was mostly gone). My stylist was really impressed with how well the color held up.

I wish I had used Extreme Purple conditioner instead of Vibrant, because my shade of purple needed to be more wow-bam-in-your-face; that said, the conditioner definitely deposits colour, and Vibrant would work really well for anyone with a more subdued tone.

I am in LOVE with this stuff. Maintaining pastel-colored hair is nigh impossible even a week after leaving salon, let alone MONTHS out from a visit. But that’s what’s been happening on my head. I’m lavender still, two freaking months post-salon visit. I got the Pastel Purple Conditioner and it’s basically my favorite thing in the shower. And when the shampoo started winning the battle of the bland, I boosted my color SUPER DUPER EASILY with their Go Deep Pastel Purple Weekly Treatment, which was like taking a mini-trip to the salon.

Basically this stuff is like Megan-simple hair care for non-traditional colors.

Also, it smells awesome.

Comments on How the color-depositing conditioners of oVertone changed my hair routine forever

  1. It’s been a really long time since I’ve colored my hair, but is anyone else in love with not just their selection, but also how freaking affordable all of this stuff is??? Now I’m tempted to add a little oomph back into my do.

    • Really nice hair dye! With the Great color! Give so fine color and so natural look. Everybody around is telling me my hair color looks so good and amazing and I know it too, LOL! I naturally had the highlights in my hair with the deep brown base color. I applied this natural hair dye and now my hair is even darkest with the captivating reddish highlights. It can cover the grays hundred percent perfectly and for long. I am going to use this color until I am able to color my hair myself. Yes, of course, one suggestion I would like to give you guys is that always use Saran Wrap after the application of the color because the coverage is 100% this way. I can say that I have tried many other products of Henna of various brands and https://www.thehennaguys.com/ is absolutely great.

  2. I want this stuff so much!! The extreme purple conditioner would be so perfect for my hair. Sadly the postage is just too much to the UK for it to be worth it, but if I had the money (or lived in the states) this would be the only conditioner I’d use.

  3. Oooh this isn’t fair! I keep trying to figure out if I can afford taking my very dark brown hair to that exact gorgeous turquoise color they offer… half my waffling is color maintenance. And now here’s an easy color maintenance that comes so highly recommended!

  4. OH EM GEE! I wish I had known about this over the summer when I was taking frigid showers and still re-dying my pastel pink hair every freaking two weeks even with a whole tube of stupid Pravana in my conditioner. I finally gave up on pastel and went whole hog with Special FX Virgin Rose. Which rocks, btw, and is basically maintain free. But I would LOVE something to help maintain that fresh dyed deep color. So stoked. OBH FTW…again.

  5. I’m very interested in this stuff – however, I’m wondering what the difference is between me just putting a bottle of manic panic into regular ol’ white conditioner and using that, over using this stuff? Does this stuff help with the color bleeding as well?

    • One of the major differences is damage – when you mix dye with conditioner, the ph balance gets thrown, and you end up continuing to damage your hair! oVertone is 100% damage free – you can use it and allow your hair time to heal!

oVertone doesn’t prevent color bleeding, but it does replace the color you loose with normal daily life (hot showers, sunshine, etc). That’s how we keep your color bright as the day you dyed it!

      • I can attest to that. When I was blending my regular conditioner with my hair dye, my hair was ending up significantly drier and damaged. It was like all the conditioning properties went right out the window.

      • So … if you don’t have the exact shade of purple I want (yours is a bit blue), but I have a bottle with some left over pink dye would it cancel out your conditioning properties to add a little of that to your purple conditioner?

        • You can definitely try adding a little pink dye to our conditioner, but we wouldn’t recommend it over all for optimal hair health and results. All of our conditioners are bendable though – feel free to create a custom color by mixing our pink and purple systems together!

    • I tried vibrant and extreme purple, teal, and blue samples on my virgin 30-50% grey hair (very healthy, actually white, not grey, nor is it wiry) after the first offer and got some nice results. Leave on for 30 min+ and wrap in plastic or a disposable cap. The color was subtle with vibrant (more like pastel in the white areas) and more noticeable with extreme. Saw no color deposition on my non-white hair (which is dark ash blonde). I didn’t try to maintain, but the extreme lasted 3-plus washes after one 30 min treatment, and the vibrant lasted at least 2. Loved the blue and purple colors, teal didn’t look as good with my coloring, even though I look awesome in teal.

Definitely lots of fun and less messy than chalks for some temporary color fun! Will be using this to restock in extreme blue and purple, which look awesome pieced on my hair.

  6. I’ve been playing with blue and purple sprays and extensions for a year now. With Asian black hair, the either color is dark enough to warrant a second look & invoke the “oh I didn’t know you dyed your hair” type comments/responses, but it vibrant enough to stand out when styled “with purpose.”
I’ve been cautioned against dying because of the ease of fading in black hair. Will this truly help with maintenance and long wear??

    • YES! It will. 🙂 You should check out Yueh’s (aka: lazybumT0T on YouTube) review. She was rocking a pastel purple ombre using oVertone for a while.

The really important thing though is that you lighten/dye your hair, and then use oVertone to maintain! Since our conditioners are damage free, it’s important that your hair begins light enough for the pigment to show (or that you start with the color you want it to be).

      • I have Asian black hair, and my stylist lightens it then colors it purple. I have been using a blend of oVertone Vibrant and Extreme Purple conditioners, and it’s been awesome. Extreme took the purple a little darker than I wanted it to be for maximum impact, but the Vibrant alone wasn’t maintaining the depth of color I wanted. I use the Extreme alone on my bangs – we did a little too much lightening there, and I like the darker contrast by my face.

    • Hi KJ,

We’ve tested it on multiple types of hair – we wanted everyone to be able to stay bold! So far we’ve had Caucasian, East Asian, Native American, African American (Natural texture), and more volunteer to test oVertone – everyone had positive results. 🙂 You can see photos on our home page slider, around our blog, and on some of the product pages.

  7. I loooove my oVertone! I went to a salon to get my hair prepped with a natural blonde to light blonde ombre before dying my hair with the oVertone extreme orange. Now I add e extreme red conditioner and my hair goes from a natural red head looking color to FIRE. I get compliments all the time! I can’t decide what to do next… I’ve been using my go deep and daily conditioner since buying it back in October!

  8. Sweet! I was already bumming that my dark magenta from just before Thanksgiving is already fading out. Can’t wait to try this out. I’m just bummed that I missed the wine—it would have been perfect!

  9. I’ve been using oVertone ever since you all posted about it several months ago. My hair has stayed at such an amazingly vibrant red! I get comments on it all the time, and I get questioned as to how the hell am I keeping my color in for sso long! I always tell them about this product now.

  10. I also ordered some oVertone after the first sponsored post you guys ran about it and it’s GREAT. Between the daily conditioner and the weekly treatment* I haven’t had to dye my hair since August and I’m not going to get it dyed anytime soon. It’s a great product and I never would have heard about it without OBH, so thanks!

    * I actually use it every 3-4 weeks, but leave it on for about an hour, under a shower-cap, and blow-dry it periodically so the heat intensifies the colour.

  11. I’m just waiting for my current “naturalish” red to fade out (dyed it for a job interview) and then I totally plan on investing in this stuff once I decide what I’m doing next!

  12. Can you sort of tint your hair with this stuff? Because I don’t really want to dye my hair (it’s down to my ass and would take way too much time and money, plus my skin doesn’t really like the chemicals like at ALL). BUT it would be awesome if I could sort of build up a reddish tint over time. My hair is dark brown with strawberry blonde/red undertones (that’s how it always ends up bleaching at the ends), very thick, and has a very slight amount of wave. Anyone have any input?

  13. I am trying to figure out how this could work for me– I got my blonde hair “under-lighted” (or whatever you call it when there’s a layer of fun color under a layer of natural) bright purple this summer, and I loved it. Now it’s mostly gone except for a stripe in the back that doesn’t get sun, and my hair is mostly blonde and bleached striped. I’m guessing that oVertone would probably not work that well for me because it would turn ALL my hair purplish…? Sounds like it works better for dark hair with highlights, or all-over fun colored hair.

    • I’m pretty sure overtone works like the kind of fantasy hair colour dyes that have no ammonia. My hair has bleached streaks and the rest is my natural dark brown. All I do is apply my purple dye (will be Overtone when they get sorted with affordable international shipping soon!) to my whole head. Until I wash my hair again I have a whole head of deep purple, and after one wash it only really ‘sticks’ to the bits that are bleached. So, purple streaks with minimum hassle!

Though I’ve just noticed most of my comment is irrelevant as you said you have blonde hair! Sorry! I’ll leave it up there for anyone who might actually need that info! But for you, I think Overtone mention on their website that they recommend just putting the conditioner in the bits you want to colour, then washing it out and using normal conditioner over the rest.

  14. I’m about to dive into the deep end of non-traditional color, going red. I’m planning to go for the “fire” look and doing my tips yellow and roots red. Does anyone know if this will work for ombre styles?
I’m not looking to change the bleached parts orange like the above poster.

  15. So for someone who has never died her hair, but has just discovered this possibility of doing so without harming the hair and without a trip to the salon… How quickly will something like the Go Deep Extreme Teal Weekly Treatment be washed out? Will it ever be, or will I just have to let it grow out, like I would if I got it dyed normally? Will my roots start showing if I don’t dye it every week or whatever? Sorry, I basically have no idea what I’m doing but I’m getting really excited to try this out! 🙂

    • Hey! So we’ve got some awesome blog resources that can address your questions more fully than I can in this comment section, so I’ll give the short answers and link you to the long ones. 😉

      1. How quickly will Extreme Teal Go Deep wash out?
A: It depends largely on your hair – since oVertone is a product you use over time to maintain color, we don’t really test the washing out process ;). Some feedback we’ve received is that it seems to last longer than traditional dye.

      2. Will my roots show?
A: It depends on the color of your hair naturally on how noticable they are, but yup! If you’ve got different colors in your hair, they will show.

You should definitely check out our “getting started” blog tag – there you’ll find answers about dyeing your hair with oVertone, as well as other useful info!

  16. Just a heads-up to those using overtone who like to change their color frequently: stop using it a couple of weeks before you remove or lighten your current fashion color or it is very difficult to remove. I had a client that had been using it regularly and could not for the life of me figure out why her pink wasn’t coming out like it should until she told us she’d been using this. She came back after a couple weeks and it was easy-peasy though!
