A Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party you can totally pull off

LOVE the caterpillar cake! All photos by Elle.

Oooh how I love the birthday party that Elle recently threw for her now one-year-old daughter, Penelope. The decor, food, and attire were inspired by Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and unlike a lot of birthdays you’ll see, this one is TOTALLY pull-offable. You basically need cardboard, yarn, paper streamers, and some fruit and you have a insta-caterpillar birthday success.

Says Elle,

I printed out illustrations from the book of various foods in the story and mounted them on cardstock and skewers. I’m not sure where exactly this caterpillar was hatched, but these foods are definitely not all in season at once in any place I know of! I substituted grapes for plums. I made the caterpillar’s head to be Penny’s smash cake and cupcakes for the other kiddoes. I didn’t want to abandon our efforts to keep Penny sugar-free, so I tested a few different recipes and finally decided on this molasses-based applesauce spice cake. The frosting was whipped cream cheese with crushed pineapple.
Fruit table! YUM.
I'm loving the cardboard-and-skewers. Fab!
Streamer ceiling = win.
Everyone made their own caterpillar bookmark.
And of course they read the book!
Totally infatuated with the handmade invites! So clever, so simple.
Cake. Yes.
Happy clan!
